Low Level Stress Upon Waking Up

Stress pops up for me most in the morning -- when I'm half awake.

Once awake I'm much better, but sometimes I slowly awake and find myself worrying about something or just thinking of something that has or might go wrong.

The only idea I've had is to set an alarm clock so that I do not slowly awaken...

Any other ideas?

Re: Low Level Stress Upon Waking Up

I often have this problem as well. Thoughts will persist if they feel unorganized in your mind. At bed time I write down the things that are of a high priority or that might be stressing me out and if it's possible, I also write down the next step or a purposed plan of action. It doesn't have to be all organized completely, but somehow this small step helps my brain feel less stressed.

Do you have two alarms on

Do you have two alarms on your clock? I set one for 15 minutes before I actually need to get up ~

I set it to a radio station I like and wake to music.

other ideas..

I feel like this is a really common, not so fun, phenomenon. Using an alarm clock to keep from waking slowly is an incredible idea, and I’m going to take this moment to share something that, coincidentally, I learned from my horoscope this week:

"An Indian student named Sankalp Sinha has invented the "Good Morning Sing N Shock." It's an alarm clock that plays you a song and gives you a small electrical jolt when you hit the snooze button. The voltage applied is far less intense than, say, a taser, and is designed to energize you rather than disable you." (Never experience half -awake stress again!)

I think Sankalp is on to something there, but just for fun, another option could be to take your awareness of this occurrence as an opportunity for a general life upgrade (also known, in most circles, as growth and development or personal transformation) You know, in case you’re out of town and forget your shocking alarm clock, or something like that..

If this idea appeals to you, I have nothing but flowery warm things to say about my girl Kelly McGonigal’s “The Neuroscience of Change”. While making neuroscience approachable and comprehensible, she explains how to create effective change in your thinking habits by using mindfulness and self-compassion techniques. Also, she is beyond amazing at explaining how and why transformation takes place in your brains. It’s pretty mind-blowing (yep, pun intended) stuff that I find useful in ways far beyond mild sleepy stresses.

Step into the flames

I can't help but feel that setting an alarm to propel you out of the anxious state into a more (distractable?) awakened state is plastering over the cracks in some way.

Maybe try writing down your thoughts on what the source of your anxiety might be, and later in the day, spend some time thinking about how you might resolve the issues. Talk to a friend if needs be, but resolving the sources of anxiety, even a small step at a time, is surely prefereable to dealing with ongoing anxieties at the start of the day.

I tend to find that issues that cause me to worry or be anxious are generally opportunities for personal growth and a chance to learn something about ny own habit patterns. Get stuck in and do that work :D

Low level stress on waking

I have always been in the habit of setting my alarm to something that is not a solid sound, such as a morning music sound. I have it go off a 12/hr to 15 minutes before I actually have to get up. I have a couple of radio stations on my phone, like Pandora, or the Gogle play music apps, that play continuously even after I am awake, which distracts me from thinking and lets me just listen. Now here's something you may not have heard from a 51 year old before....I sleep with stuffed animals. When I wake up to the alarm, i have my animals and the feeling of them somehow makes my brain think I am a kid, so I get all comfy again until I HAVE to get up. There is no age limit to who can sleep with a stuffed lamb :-) . I wish you well in your journey for restful waking.

Morning Stress

Instead of an alarm clock why don't you play a morning meditation or hypnosis "wake up feeling great" sort of thing--maybe increasing in volume, if that's somehow possible.

Offset printing is a widely

Offset printing is a widely used printing technique where the inked image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. When used in combination with the lithographic process, which is based on the repulsion of oil and water, the offset technique employs a flat (planographic) image carrier on which the image to be printed obtains ink from ink rollers, while the non-printing area attracts a film of water, keeping the non-printing areas ink-free.
