 Mick Rossi

Mick Rossi is an internationally celebrated pianist, composer, percussionist, conductor, and arranger. He is both a pianist and percussionist for the renowned Philip Glass ensemble. Mick is known for his diverse, progressive work in the New York Downtown scene, and has been described by All About Jazz-Italy as “one of the most courageous and gifted charismatic musicians in New York and beyond." Performances include the Knitting Factory, Fringe, and the Montreux Jazz Festival, John Zorn’s The Stone, Tonic, Iridium, Barbes, Roulette, and Joe’s Pub. Mick has also been heard in performance and on recordings with numerous popular artists including: Roger Daltry, Daryl Hall and John Oates (Hall & Oates), Jewel, Randy Newman, David Sanborn, and Carly Simon.

Mick's Broadway credits include The Who's Tommy, Jekyll and Hyde, and The Full Monty, among others. He has also scored, orchestrated, and/or mixed films airing on ABC, NBC, FOX, Disney, The History Channel, Modern Marvels, A&E, and HBO. Recent films include The Vagina Monologues (HBO), Standing in the Shadows of Motown (Artisan), and his scores for the award-winning independent films Born Again (Markie Hancock), The Other Side of the River, and Journey (both by Lin Chien Ping). He has made appearances on PBS, Lifetime, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, VH-1, and MTV.

In addition, Mick conducted the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare Festival production of The Bacchae (directed by JoAnne Akalaitis, with music by Philip Glass) in Central Park. Mick has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and American Ballet Theater. He has served as music director and curator of the MATA Festival in New York, has just completed his third string quartet, and recently conducted Philip Glass’s Book of Longing in Milan, Melbourne, and Sydney. Other recent Glass projects Mick has participated in include Orion, Music in 12-Parts, and Einstein on the Beach at Carnegie Hall. Mick has also performed on seven Glass recordings.

Mick's solo recordings include They Have a Word for Everything (Knitting Factory), Nosferatu (Dreambox), Inside the Sphere (Cadence), New Math ToneScience), and the upcoming Songs from the Broken Land (Orange Mountain Music). Nosferatu was featured on WYNC's New Sounds with John Schaefer. Mick's ninth recording, One Block from Planet Earth (OmniTone), received four stars from DownBeat, and All About Jazz described it as “Life relishing and unpretentiously profound." One Block was spotlighted on several top-ten new release lists, including the Downtown Music Gallery. Mick was also nominated for a Grammy in 1998.

Mick studied under Dennis Sandole (teacher of John Coltrane), and went on to pursue a Master's Degree in composition from New York University.
