About the Author

Stevin McNamara

Stevin McNamara has been playing music since the age of nine and has been recording music for more than 25 years. He has composed and performed the introductory music on hundreds of Sounds True's audio-learning courses. (We can't tell you how many customers call us and ask, "Who is that guitar player on the beginning of your CDs"?) Stevin is in the unique position of being an accomplished composer/musician and a world-class recording engineer. This gives him total freedom in any recording environment. Born in South Africa, Stevin started learning piano and guitar at the age of seven. He played solo and in bands all the way through high school. At the age of 20, Stevin moved to the United States, where he had more formal training at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He has been involved in music ever since.Although Stevin grew up with the sounds of African music, he also discovered Indian music in the early 1970s and studied the sitar with Ram Chakravarty of Benares, who was professor of music at Wesleyan College in Connecticut. This diverse exposure to such a broad spectrum of music, ranging from world to pop, has contributed to the unique musical style Stevin has developed throughout the years. In the late 1970s, after spending considerable time as a session musician in recording studios, Stevin became fascinated with what was happening "on the other side of the glass," namely the recording process itself. This passion developed into a highly successful career as an audio engineer. He has worked in the fields of popular music, world, folk, jazz, and film and television in top studios in South Africa, England, and the United States. Stevin is perfectly at home in any state of the art recording facility or live sound scenario, even at stadium concert level. He is qualified to teach audio engineering at the college level. Stevin has worked with well-known producers such as Robert John "Mutt" Lange and a huge spectrum of recording artists from Paul Winter to Tina Turner, from Bryan Adams to Zakir.

Description

In modern-day Persia, the 14th-century poet Hafiz remains the most treasured voice of his homeland—a place where his work outsells Rumi, and even the Koran. Yet only recently have Westerners come to know this wild Sufi mystic's astonishing verses on love and spiritual longing.

Now, with Hafiz: The Scent of Light, you will join Daniel Ladinsky—the acclaimed translator of The Gift—to revel in more than 30 of Hafiz' most stirring works. Offered here in the manner that Hafiz composed them, namely spoken or sung spontaneously amid companions and inspired music, each of these exquisite love songs (ghazals) shimmers with a nuance, depth, and passion rarely captured in previous translations.

Hafiz once said: "A poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, then raise it to nourish your beautiful parched holy mouth." From his vision of an all-embracing Beloved who sees beyond our religious beliefs to his revelations on the oneness of worldly ecstasy and spiritual awakening, Hafiz continues to pour the light of his poetry forth today.

Music composed and performed by Stevin McNamara (sitar and nylon string guitar), with special guest artists and composers Steve Gorn (bansuri flute), Jeffrey Rodgers (tabla, santoor, ethnic drums, percussion), Annette Cantor (vocals), Pandit S.N. Sopori (drupad/khyal/tarana singing), Bhushan Sopori (tabla), and Aurelia Roze (violin). Read by Nataraja Kallio.

At first I thought the poetry was weird and a little silly, but as I listened I became enthralled. These short statements are so rich with meaning and every time I listen I get something different to take away. Love it!

As an amateur poet, my first response to hearing this recording was total despair...Ladinsky's translations and Nataraja's reading is so frickin' moving and gutsy that I have given up all hope of creating a love quatrain that will ever come close. The music by Stevin McNamara is more Indian than Persian, but is largely responsible for the power of this recording. Warning: play this in very small doses, just 1-2 tracks at a time or you may blow out a tire. ;) - AY
