The Experience

Making Sense of Our Experience:
The Heartwork of Resilience with Mark Nepo

For any spirit
suddenly awakened
to how deep its life
and how short its stay.

The point of experience is not to escape life, but to live it. Each of us carries some wisdom waiting to be discovered at the center of our experience, and everything we meet, if faced and held, reveals a part of that wisdom. Still, time exposes the story of our lives with its friction, wearing away the film that covers our eyes and the calluses that guard our heart, till we can apprehend the wonder waiting under the skin of everything. How can we meet this process? How can we ready ourselves? Who and what do we listen to along the way? How do we listen to life and not to what life does to us when suffering and loss meet us at every turn? How do we make sense of our experience?

This workshop will be an invitation to be in relationship with deep and life-giving material. In this hands-on, hearts-on session, Mark will explore the passages that open us and the tools that help us meet the difficulties that life brings us. He will discuss topics such as the sanctity of experience, things that hearten and dishearten, our call to endure and endear, and the arts of reverence.

Using ancient and contemporary stories, poetry, journaling, and dialogue, Mark will delve into what it means to be touched by a life-threatening situation and what it asks of us. He will explore the nature of fear, pain, vulnerability, and resilience. He will unfold what it means to be transformed by what we go through, and how to access our inner resources for learning, growing, and healing.

“One of the great transforming passages in my life was having cancer in my mid-thirties. This experience unraveled the way I see the world and made me a student of all spiritual paths. But what I've learned speaks to the heartwork of resilience that is relevant to all of us as we work with and through pain and fear, and begin to practice living with an open heart. It's my hope that our time together will open you to the fullness of your own humanity. With a steadfast belief in our aliveness, I hope what we explore together will help you meet the transformation that waits in however you're being forged.”
—Mark Nepo
