Kelly McGonigal: The Neuroscience of Change
Thursday, April 19, 2012
Tami Simon speaks with Dr. Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and leading expert on the mind-body relationship. Dr. McGonigal is the author of The Willpower Instinct and Yoga for Pain Relief, and with Sounds True she has created an audio learning program called The Neuroscience of Change. In this episode, Tami speaks with Dr. McGonigal about how we can consciously change the “default settings” of our brain, what we can do to tune into ourselves at a physiological level during difficult emotional situations, and how self-criticism can hinder our attempts to change our behavior. Dr. McGonigal also shares a practice of cultivating self-compassion. (57 minutes)

Future astronauts traveling for long time periods could benifet from this type of neuroscience. Good job Kelly McGonigal…D.L.M.

I have been practicing “TM” regularly since1972. This talk has identified, and clarified my experiences with mindfulness via my practices. This talk was extremely helpful. I have already ordered Kelly’s book, and I will order the Sounds True program. These are absolutely exciting times to be alive. Thank you so much Tami Simon for bringing these types of programs to the world. Your programs have made a wonderful difference to my quality of life. Kind regards, Mark RIhel (elementary school principal). P.S. We need these types of programs for children-without
the religious/meditative connotations

This was amazing, and eye opening. I am in the medical field, yet have been studying the eastern traditions for about 5 years. I love that there is scientific evidence of how the brain is functioning during these practices of self compassion vs self criticism. How do I find a 8 week mindfulness training program like what Kelly is teaching in my area. Thank you Kelly for your research!

Mind opening interview. Thank you, Kelly, for breaking down current neuroscientific studies and the practice of self-compassion. And Tami, I really appreciate Insights at the Edge and the authentic way you ask questions!

I have listened to this interview five times today and I hear something new each time…I feel it unfolds and reveals a part of me as I absorb what matters at a personal level; although, really, every word spoken is relavant in its general sense. Thanks a million Tami and Kelly…invaluable interviews on Insights at the Edge. I am addicted to them but, will not surf this urge!!
