Self-rejection comes in a variety of guises—inner and outer critics, internalizing myths about perfection from our culture and upbringing, and many more ways both subtle and overt. Tara Brach, a clinical psychologist and teacher of Buddhist mindfulness meditation, says that the first step towards self-acceptance is to become aware of how corrosive our habits of self-rejection really are. Here she describes the foundations of what she calls radical self-acceptance—true freedom from the endless cycle of trying to change who we are.
