{"id":6069,"date":"2013-05-31T07:12:54","date_gmt":"2013-05-31T13:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/manyvoices.soundstrue.com\/manyvoices\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2020-04-07T20:06:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T20:06:15","slug":"resurrecting-jesus-adyashanti-on-the-true-meaning-of-a-revolutionary-mystic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources2.soundstrue.com\/blog\/resurrecting-jesus-adyashanti-on-the-true-meaning-of-a-revolutionary-mystic\/","title":{"rendered":"Resurrecting Jesus: Adyashanti on the True Meaning of a Revolutionary Mystic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Until this spring, the last time I\u2019d read the New Testament was a quarter-century ago, when I was in college studying comparative religion and literature.&nbsp; Back then, I spent all my time reading the mystics\u2014not just the Christian mystics, but Sufis and kabbalists too. Though I loved the desert fathers and Meister Eckhart and St. John of the Cross, I eventually read less and less of the Christian mystics.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t grow up in a church-going family, so I didn&#8217;t have a lot of baggage around my personal experience of Christianity.&nbsp; Still, I had a problem with Jesus\u2014or rather, all the things that the church had done in Jesus\u2019 name.&nbsp; I couldn\u2019t separate my feelings about the centuries of crusades and witch hunts, about the church\u2019s institutionalized drive for worldly power, about the repression and small-mindedness of the Christian right, from my feeling about Christianity\u2019s \u2018founder\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Christian theology got in my way, too; as someone with a mystical bent, I couldn\u2019t accept that my own relationship with the divine required an intermediary, and the whole doctrine of the Trinity seemed needlessly complicated.&nbsp; Finally, on those few occasions when I did go to church, I found the Jesus portrayed in the pulpit to be simplistic, even insipid.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, in spite of all these blocks to the predominant religion of my culture, I also sensed an immense transmission of love right at the core of Jesus\u2019 teachings, prior to any of the trappings of doctrine and theology. I&nbsp; sensed it, but I couldn\u2019t access it.<\/p>\n<p>Then, a few years ago, I stumbled upon one of Adyashanti\u2019s Christmas satsangs, and a whole new view of Jesus opened up for me.&nbsp; The Jesus he portrayed was a spiritual revolutionary, one whose life could be read as a <a title=\"map of the awakening journey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soundstrue.com\/shop\/productdetails?p=4346&amp;component=coursesevents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">map of the awakening journey<\/a>.&nbsp; This view of Jesus didn\u2019t so much resolve my earlier issues with \u201cchurch Jesus\u201d as render them pointless.&nbsp; After all, if there\u2019s only one truth and it\u2019s only found <i>now<\/i>, all historical perspectives are moot.<\/p>\n<p>The more I listened, the deeper Adya\u2019s message on Jesus resonated for me.&nbsp; When it came time to brainstorm new projects with Adya, I suggested that we ask if he\u2019d be willing to teach on Jesus.&nbsp; As it turned out, he was already preparing for a weeklong retreat on that very topic, and was happy to take on these new projects. That was the genesis of Adya\u2019s current online course\u2014and upcoming book and audio program\u2014Resurrecting Jesus: Embodying the Spirit of a Revolutionary Mystic.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, I traveled with Tami Simon and Hayden Peltier (one of our audio engineers) to record Adya at a studio in the mountains above Santa Cruz. I was excited to be part of the recording, but didn\u2019t realize just what a profound impact listening to Adya talk about the Jesus story for four days would have on me.&nbsp; &nbsp;As those who have attended satsangs or intensives with <a title=\"Adyashanti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soundstrue.com\/shop\/authors\/Adyashanti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adyashanti <\/a>already know, his presence is a teaching, and his talks carry a powerful transmission.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the recording, I found myself energized and excited to work on editing the video, audio and book projects that we\u2019d captured.&nbsp; In the months since, I\u2019ve read the gospels over and over\u2014especially the Gospel of Mark, which is the primary text Adya refers to in <a title=\"Resurrecting Jesus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soundstrue.com\/shop\/productdetails?p=4346&amp;component=coursesevents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Resurrecting Jesus<\/a>.&nbsp; I see clearly now how the Jesus story maps out the journey of awakening.&nbsp; But for me, the most exciting aspect of the project has been discovering what a fantastic <i>story<\/i> Mark tells in his gospel.&nbsp; The Jesus who comes through in Mark\u2014now that I\u2019ve heard Adya\u2019s take on the gospel\u2019s deeper meanings\u2014is engaged, compelling, and totally unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>I know how many people have grown disillusioned with the Christian tradition, even as they seek deeper spiritual insight through other practices and traditions.&nbsp; My hope is that <a title=\"Resurrecting Jesus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soundstrue.com\/shop\/productdetails?p=4346&amp;component=coursesevents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Resurrecting Jesus<\/a> will invite others to reconnect\u2014or connect for the first time\u2014with the deep wisdom of the Jesus story.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1141\" alt=\"jesus_blog\" src=\"https:\/\/manyvoices.soundstrue.com\/manyvoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/jesus_blog-740x493.jpg\" width=\"740\" height=\"493\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Until this spring, the last time I\u2019d read the New Testament was a quarter-century ago, when I was in college studying comparative religion and literature.&nbsp; Back then, I spent all my time reading the mystics\u2014not just the Christian mystics, but Sufis and kabbalists too.
