I wanted to share with you the invocation given by our dear friend and author Mirabai Starr<\/a> at the recent Wake Up Festival<\/a>. Invoking the great wisdom traditions throughout our world, Mirabai led the community in prayer and gratitude as we opened this year’s event. Several of you mentioned that you were really moved by Mirabai’s words; we wanted make make a copy available here. May you drink deeply.<\/p>\n

Beloved One,
\nLiving Light,
\nSpirit of All That Is,
\nwe give thanks.
\nThank you for welcoming us
\nto this sacred circle.<\/p>\n

We come from everywhere,
\nand we find you wherever we are:
\ninside the holy houses of each of the world\u2019s faiths,
\nand out in the wild places of the earth;
\nshoulder to shoulder in the mosque,
\nbending to press our hearts to the ground in surrender;
\nin the haunting Hebrew melodies of our ancestors
\nas we call on the Shekinah to infuse us
\nwith her indwelling feminine spirit;
\nin the communion bread and wine,
\nwhich we take in remembrance
\nof the Prince of Peace.
\nWe hear your voice joining with ours when we chant the Divine Names
\nin Sanskrit and Tibetan, Tiwa and Maya and Maori.<\/p>\n

We meet you high on alpine trails,
\nwhere we stop to rest among fragrant wild herbs,
\nbeside a stream rushing with melted snow.
\nWe feel you holding us when we float in the arms of the ocean
\nand she sways us with her breath.
\nWe kiss you when we are making love;
\nwe mourn you when an elder releases her final exhalation;
\nwe soothe you when we rock a tired child in our arms.<\/p>\n

We look for you in the pulsating emptiness,
\nsearch for your true form in the heart of formlessness,
\nunexpectedly recognize you when we give up and turn away.<\/p>\n

You shine through the ecstatic stanzas of the poets and mystics,
\neach one singing your praises in a different language.
\nYou well up in our aching hearts
\nwhen we cry out for the pain of the world.
\nYou are the call to justice,
\nand the answering response of mercy.
\nYou are in the wounding of the earth
\nand you are the only hope for mending her.<\/p>\n

Oh Great Spirit,
\nFather-Mother God,
\nTrue Self and No-Self,
\nInvisible animating energy of Life:
\nWe claim our place at your table
\nand find ourselves home at last.
\nHere may we eat and be filled,
\ndrink and become unbridled,
\nlay down our burdens and take refuge,
\ndrop into your sacred silence and remember.<\/p>\n

And let us take this remembrance back out into our lives,
\nThat we may truly be of service
\nin this broken and beautiful world.<\/p>\n
