Right this minute, my mind is simultaneously processing way too many thoughts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to walk the dogs.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Text my friend back.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow\u2019s physics final.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College applications.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to make lunch.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What time do I have to wake up tomorrow?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems as though my mind is always on overload. But I\u2019m not actually getting anything done. Why is this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s because our brains aren\u2019t meant to hold this much information. Science shows that we can only store a maximum of three or four things at once in our conscious mind, also known as our \u201cworking memory.\u201d When we hold on to more than this, our brains become like messy rooms\u2014cluttered and full of junk, so we can\u2019t find anything. Intentions are state- ments for how we would like to go about our day. Unlike a goal, an intention doesn\u2019t require any steps to reach a certain objective. It\u2019s simply a way to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intentions work like magic. They affect our behavior, how our day goes, and even what things \u201chappen\u201d to us. Here\u2019s how to get started:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make your intentions at a set time each day, such as right after waking up. Take a deep breath. Notice how you feel. Do you have pain anywhere in your body? What is the first thought that pops into your mind? Is your brain racing with stress or worry? Pay attention to all of it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask yourself, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I want to bring into this day? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathe and listen to your body\u2019s answer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Roll over, grab a pen and notebook, and write down three intentions for the day. Be sure to state them all in the affirmative. (For example, \u201cI will practice forgiveness\u201d rather than \u201cI will not hold a grudge.\u201d) Here is a sample:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will be patient with myself.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will listen intently to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will speak out of kindness.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Read over your list. Let your intentions seep in. It might help to read them out loud. When you feel satisfied, seal the practice with another deep breath.
