Jai guru dev, jai masters. If you’re sincere about your growth—and everybody goes about their growth different ways, which is fine—over time, you start to see things you didn’t see before. And the two very prominent things you’ll come to see as you get clearer and clearer are the mind and the heart. When you’re not clear, it’s just commotion.

They go up, they go down, they’re noisy, they’re quiet, they’re problematic, they’re not so bad, they’re fun, they’re a lot of not fun. There’s just constant change. There’s constant instability in those two objects of the universe, mind and heart. When we’re really lost, we don’t see them as objects of the universe.

We just see them as who we are. We just see them as something we have to deal with. The heart is very difficult to deal with. It’s very difficult. The mind is very difficult to deal with. That’s why there’s all these teachings about mind control, about positive thinking, about “keep your heart open,” and I always say, “Well, why do you need to keep your heart open?”

Because it tends to close. And the truth of the matter is, people don’t know how to control their mind, and people don’t know how to deal with their heart. Why? They’ve never really been taught. Mind control is not a way to deal with your mind. And I’m not saying there aren’t wonderful teachings that can help you tremendously, but if you have to control your mind, there’s something wrong.

You understand that? If your car is out of control, control your car—it could hit somebody. It’s not supposed to be out of control, right? It’s a car. It’s there to serve you. Your mind is not supposed to be out of control. You shouldn’t have to control it. Your heart is not supposed to be out of your control.

You have to fix it and solve it, protect it, all the time protecting it. No, there’s something drastically wrong if you have to control your heart and control your mind. So that’s what I’d like to talk about—not how to do it, why you need to do it. Let’s start with the mind. What is the mind?

Again, most people will never, in their entire life, step back enough to even ask the question. They’re too busy trying to do what the mind wants and not do what the mind doesn’t want. That is how they spend their entire life, and you’re probably not a big exception. All right? When the mind’s giving you trouble, you—

I think this is hilarious. When the mind’s giving you trouble, you go to your mind to figure out what to do about it. What do you want to bet you lose? Your mind is a problem. You don’t go to a problematic mind and ask it to come up with a solution, because it will not do so. It will just come up with more problems.

And don’t tell me you don’t do that. When your mind is giving you trouble, you go to your mind to figure out what to do about it. Can we talk about that? The thing is obviously not working well, right? And the worse it is, the more you go to it for advice. “I’m depressed. I’m so depressed.

I don’t think I’ll ever be happy again the rest of my life. What should I do?” “I don’t know. Run away and hide in the woods, I don’t know.” It’s going to give you some weird advice. Who’s telling you to do that? The mind. Which mind? The mind that’s having the problem. So at some point, there’s a good foundation for people to wake up.

So it’s not about mind control. It’s about: what is going on, and how am I so ignorant—ignoring the reality that my mind is giving me trouble, and I’m going to my mind to tell me what to do about it? And I’m going to tell you right now, it will not give you good advice. Like the people who got married and had their honeymoon at Niagara Falls—that’s it.

They’re not getting along very well. In fact, all they do is fight. They just fight. It’s not working out, and years of fighting. They stop and they say, “What are we going to do about this?” And their mind says, “Let’s go back to where we had our honeymoon, at Niagara Falls.” Are you kidding me? You’re going to bring your fight with you.

There’s no… You have in your mind what it was like when you got married. You’re not like that, he’s not like this, she’s not like that, it’s not like that. What are you doing? But the mind will do that, won’t it? All right. So now you start to understand the mind. Okay, how did it get that way? Because it’s broken.

It’s broken. It’s ridiculous to go to the mind to solve your problems. The mind is the problem. How about I say it to you like this: “The mind is always the problem.” I’ll talk to you a little logically now. How do you know you have a problem? Because your mind told you that you did. Well—no, no, that’s not true.

“My husband’s leaving me.” Okay, is that a problem? You decide. Could be a blessing. If you’re a couple that fights all the time, can’t get divorced, and all of a sudden there’s this letter on the side of the table, and it says, “I’m leaving, you can keep the kids.” All right? Is it a problem or not? You can’t answer me, can you?

“I’m getting older. I’m getting older. I got real old. I don’t know what happened,” right? “I’m getting older.” Is that a problem? You don’t understand—getting older is like getting liberated. People don’t expect anything of you. “Ah, he’s old.” You burp—”It’s an old man, what’s the difference?” It’s truly liberating, all right?

It’s like you don’t have to worry what you look like, because you don’t look good anyway, and you’re busy trying to make yourself look good with plastic surgery, all kinds of stuff. When you’re old, it doesn’t look really good. It looks like an old person who’s trying to look young, all right?

Just be old. So what if your mind told you, “This stinks, getting old”? What if your mind told you… Let me share this very, very special moment in my life, once. I was living alone, doing my intense sadhana in that house up there—total solitude, everything, meditating six hours a day and stuff—and somebody gave me kind of a black-market tape of Yogananda speaking.

SRF didn’t put it out. It wasn’t a standard one of master’s lectures, but it was kind of neat, and somebody had taped it. It was rough to hear, and I’ll never forget his words. He said, “Practice these kriyas, the techniques I’ve given to you, and when it’s time for you to come across, I will come down myself, reach out my hand, and take you to my beloved.”

Okay, I’m getting old. And he’s your guru. The words are truth, and let’s say you’ve had enough inner experiences to realize, yeah—now, you don’t get to rush just because I’m telling you this, right? It has to happen naturally. But now you have a totally different mindset about what it means to die, as opposed to “you’re going to hell.

One sin, I’m keeping track, you’d better straighten it out.” Okay? That’s a totally different mindset when it comes time to die, right or wrong, all right? Which is it? It is whatever your mind says it is. I mean, in the end you’ll find out what it is, really—you’ll have the experience. But until then, it’s what your mind says.

Is there a heaven? Is there a hell? Am I going to go there? What’s going to happen? Is somebody writing down everything I ever did in a little book down there, right? Your mind decides, and don’t ask me which is it, because my answer to that is, you’ll find out. That is the proper answer to “what’s your philosophy of what happens when you die?”

I would never… I’m not interested in your philosophy. Why have a philosophy? You’re going to find out. Your mind is doing all of this. Which mind? Oh, the crazy mind. Does it give you trouble? Then how can it give you answers? It’s a problem. We’ll talk about the proper use of mind. When I said the car’s out of control, that’s not right.

That doesn’t mean you don’t drive a car. You don’t need mind control because your mind is in control. You need mind control because your mind’s out of control. Okay? And then you struggle with that your whole life, and most people, they don’t even struggle with it. They just do whatever it says. What’s the easiest way to have your mind not struggle?

Just do what it says to do. Try it out sometime. “I think I’ve eaten enough.” “Just keep… I want to keep eating. I’ve got to keep eating.” “Okay, I’ll keep eating.” Do you know that your mind does not eat? No, seriously. But it says, “I want more.” It’s not even eating. It’s never eaten in its entire life. The mind doesn’t know anything about this stuff, right?

That’s something the body does. The mind’s back here thinking, thinking, “I want more. No, I don’t like what it tastes like. Take it away from me. I don’t like it. Give me more. I want…” It’s not eating. It’s never eaten. Are you getting a picture of how I look at mind? It’s a thing that you hang out with.

That is what your mind is. You do call it your mind, my mind. Well, “my” is a possessive pronoun. Whose mind is it? Pay attention to me. See, your words are very intuitive. You say, “My mind’s causing me trouble. I’ve been meditating, my mind is so quiet now.” Whose mind? That’s a possessive pronoun. My car, my house, my violin, my girlfriend, my boyfriend.

These are things you have a relationship with. They’re not you. If I say my girlfriend or my boyfriend, am I them? No, by definition, I used the word “my.” I made it very clear: I’m me, they’re them. And I have a relationship, so they’re mine. Okay? You do say “my mind,” don’t you? However, I ask you, how’s your mind doing lately?

Your mind? Whose? Okay? You are not your mind. You’re not your mind. You’re the one who has one. You have a body. You have a mind. You have a heart. Who does? Ramana Maharshi—there was an entire teaching: who sees when I see, who thinks when I think, who feels when I feel? Who is in there having these experiences?

So you have a mind. That’s a good starting spiritual discussion. You have a mind. Without getting embarrassed, how’s it working out? So you have one, but somehow it’s a problem. It causes problems, and you try to solve it. I’ll say it once more. I’m telling you, pay attention. You try to solve the problems of your mind by listening to your mind.

“I’m not happy. I don’t like what’s going on. Well, what should I do?” “Well, you should get a divorce. You should leave. You should get another job. You should find something more interesting. You need to find something more interesting.” What does it do? Who? You? Your mind. Isn’t that beautiful? Pay attention. You’re not your mind, and it’s a serious problem.

What, that you’re not your mind? No—that you don’t know how to deal with the thing, or how it got that way. How the mind got the way it is, I don’t need to write a treatise on it. It’s very simple how your mind got the way it is. I’ve discussed it a little before, but let’s do it now that you’re listening.

We’re talking about that thing that talks in there, your mind. Why does it say what it says? How did it get that way? How did it come up with the idea that it’s not okay, and how did it come up with the ideas of what it should do to be okay? It does that stuff, doesn’t it? How did it come up with that stuff?

You have had past experiences. How many? Every moment of your life, you’re having an experience. Some of them—like 90, I’ll say 95%—go right through. What do you mean? You’re driving down the road, cars are driving by. You see them, you experience them, and then you’re be here now.

You’re not back with them. You didn’t stop the car and go running after them, did you? Sometimes. But no, they just come in and they go through. That’s what “be here now” means. They come in, you do experience them. You don’t not experience them. Your mind can experience—it comes into your mind, which is very nice, comes in and passes through.

Then the next thing happens, next thing happens. But not all of them pass right through. Now I get sad—do they? Some of them get stuck in there. Some of them, right, they come in, and your cars are driving by, and the example I use in Untethered Soul is cars driving by, everything’s fine, driving by, happy day, happy mood, no problem, not excited, just driving down the road, the freeway, plenty of cars driving by, and all of a sudden a car—it went by real quick, looked like your girlfriend or boyfriend was in the car hugging somebody.

Does that go right through? What do you mean, go right through? It just is like any other car, like any other situation. It just comes in and it goes through. There were thousands that went through earlier in the day, all day as you drove down the expressway, but this one didn’t go right through. It stopped.

What did I just see? Was it really her or him? I don’t know. I’d better think about it. I wonder where they are. What should I do about it? Should I call and try… No, I don’t want to do that. I’m going to get hurt. I’ll wait. Here it is, deciding it has a problem. All the other cars drove by. Well, what is that about?

And now it’s trying to figure out what to do about it. There it is. Your day’s over. Okay? Do you see what I’m saying? Something stopped that. What? That experience, that moment, that sensory input that came in. It was just like any other sensory input. Atoms are floating around out there, and they come in, and you experience them, and so on.

That one stayed. How do you know it stayed? Because it’s still there after I drove by. I don’t know what to tell you. Somehow it’s staying there. Next thing I know, instead of continuing to drive down the road, I’m thinking about stuff. About what? What I just saw. But it’s already over. No, not for me, it’s not over.

There. Okay? So now mind isn’t just an experience that’s picking up the input from the senses and passing through, and you’re having your life, and you’re experiencing it. All of a sudden, it got stuck. How did it get stuck? What made it get stuck? Is there glue in there? There’s no glue in there. There’s no super glue in there.

There are no little crevices where it gets stuck. There ain’t nothing in there but nothing. There’s just empty mind. There’s just clarity, just beautiful, just passing through the air. It does, I said, 95% of the time, just pass right through. What made the difference? You’re in there. Who? You, who are experiencing it.

You experience the experience. You’re a conscious being, aren’t you? You’re the awareness that had the experience. You’re not the experience. You’re the awareness that was aware of the experience. So you’re experiencing all these different things. They’re coming in and passing through. You are experiencing them.

You’re not not. But you in there—I’m talking about the self. I’m talking about the Atman, the soul, the indwelling being, whatever you want to call it. You are conscious, and you are not helpless in there. You have this thing called will. Rarely do people talk about it. What is will? It is a power that you have.

Consciousness, awareness of being, has a power. It can stop that thing from passing through. Can’t it? Isn’t that amazing? You don’t think about it. It’s happening so fast. It’s so natural, right? You have the ability to focus on that incident—that moment—more than every other moment that’s passing through.

And when you focus on it, it gets stuck. It is literally the focusing of your awareness that holds it. You’re aware of it, but everything—non-dual, everything’s the same. There’s cars driving by—yes, there’s cars driving by. There are people in them—yes, there are people in them. There’s weather happening.

There’s noise. There’s music playing. There are billions of things going on at the same time, and it’s coming in, and you are experiencing it. But all of a sudden, this one thing comes in, and you stop it. You assert more focus on that. That’s the clearest I can ever tell you about will, right? You focused more on that moment than the other ones, didn’t you?

It distracted your consciousness enough to draw your attention. What word can I use? It drew your attention to that object. When you focus your attention on something, you stop it from passing through. It’s one of the first things I learned in deep meditation. You start noticing, “Wow, if I focus on it, it stays there.

The more I focus on it, the more it stays there. In fact, if I focus on it enough, it could be called traumatic.” It stayed there my whole life. It kept coming back up. Why? Because I focused on it. What if I didn’t focus on it? Then it’s not going to stay there. Can you understand that? Do you know that? I’m minding my own business, and I want to do some math in my head, okay?

You have to focus your attention on the blackboard inside your head, or however you’re doing it, okay. When you focus it, it stops. It— oh, my God, giving me shivers. You have such power in there. And how have you used it? You have power. Will isn’t just because you hold a thought in there. How do I pick up this glass?

Did I pick up the glass? Did I break physics? Is there no gravity? What happened? Where’s the oil? Where’s the atomic energy? Where’s something that gave the power to offset the power of gravity to pick up this glass? Will—you asserted will. You passed the power of your being down through the nervous system to carry out intent.

Will is a phenomenal thing. Yogananda wrote a lot about will. All of the early lessons are all about will—Kriya Yoga. I look back on them now, 50 years later. Oh, that’s what he’s talking about. A master like that, an enlightened master, understands the power of will, because they’re back there watching, and they will something to happen, and it happens.

Yukteswar, Yogananda’s guru, used to say something like, “I’m going to do this. This will take place,” right? And they questioned him, “Now, how do you know that will take place?” And he said, “Sooner should the sun and the moon change places in the sky than this won’t take place.” In other words, “I’m going to apply my will, and I’m not going to stop till it happens.”

You’re welcome to do that. Some people do it for really bad stuff, okay? But you have will. Have you noticed? So will is when you focus the power of your indwelling being—as God, but it’s focused on this little thing, so it’s God condensed on you. The power of God is will—the same will that created the universe.

The same Shakti, the same power that, boom, manifested the entire universe, is what is staring down on your mind. That’s who’s in there, the self, the Atman, God, and that power can manifest by stopping thoughts, by stopping emotions. Freud talked about this. He had these words—I like Freud a lot. Suppression, repression, denial.

Ever heard of those words? Based on Freudian psychology. What is suppression? Something came in, it didn’t make it through, and not only did it not make it through, “I don’t want it getting close to me in here. I’m in here. I ain’t letting that thing come close to me.” So it keeps something away outside, I’m keeping that away inside, by doing what?

Using your will to push it away. That’s what suppression is—using the will. Your indwelling being has will, to push the thought that came in. It got created, and would’ve passed through, but it didn’t pass through, because you didn’t let it. So suppression, repression, denial—they’re all the same thing.

They’re basically: “I’m in here, and I ain’t letting that thing touch me. I don’t want that touching me.” What? The thing that came in, came in through my senses. Here it is. It’s not coming… The snake doesn’t come in—he stays out there, right? But boy, did it leave an impression. “I can’t take walks in the woods anymore.

I’m afraid of rattlesnakes. I can’t go to houses where people have babies, because they have rattles, and it scares the hell out of me.” Why? Because you held onto that. That is what suppression, repression, denial, or resistance is. You resisted it. So there, now you understand mind. What do you mean, I understand mind?

I asked you a minute ago, why does your mind say what it says when it says it? How does it come up with the solutions it thinks there are? Because you’ve had past experiences, most of which passed right through. Here, you’re having some heartache because you’re having trouble with a relationship, and you ask your mind, “Oh mind, what should I do?”

What it’ll say is, “I’ve been here before. I’ve had relationship problems before. You can’t tolerate it—don’t let people talk to you like that. If they talk to you like that, they’ll run all over you.” You mean you’ve had past experiences that you held onto, and you started to build this model inside your head—mind.

You built a model based on your past experiences of what you like and what you don’t like. How? How did you decide what you like or don’t like? You didn’t just make it up. You’ve had past experiences, and some of them came in and felt good, and some of them came in and didn’t feel good. And let me tell you a secret.

The ones that came in and didn’t feel good, you don’t want them to happen again. I’m sorry, I don’t want to pick on you. The stupidest thing I ever heard of is that if you have an experience you really don’t like, you keep it. You keep it your whole life. What your mother did, what your father did, what your sister did, what your brother did forty years ago.

Why would you do such a thing? It’s over. But you did, so you resisted it. You used will to resist it. It got stuck. I don’t like to say “stuck,” because you’re holding it there. What do you mean, I’m holding it there? Does it ever come back up? Does it ever come back up, even though it happened 20, 30, 40 years ago?

What do you do when it comes back up? You push it back down. “No, don’t talk about that. Do not talk about that subject around me. You know I don’t like that. I had a relationship before that was like that. Stop it.” Push, push, push it away. Push it back down. Okay? So there, that’s how we built our mind.

That’s why the mind is the way it is. That’s why every mind is different, because everyone has had different experiences. No one has had the same experiences, not even close. Your entire life—no one who ever existed ever had the same experiences as you. Hey, you’re pretty special, aren’t you? Okay? And what you do with those experiences is take the ones you don’t like and store them so they make a mess of your mind.

The mind’s going to get broken if you do that. I once had—I saw it clearly, right? If you take every single thing that ever disturbed you and store it inside, what’s it going to be like in there? Disturbed. That’s why it’s disturbed. It’s not because somebody said something or didn’t say something or did something, didn’t do something—you know what I’m saying?

It’s because you stored something, and what they did hit the thing you stored. The next thing you know, your mind’s going crazy. So if something happens outside that your mind’s past experiences have judged as something you don’t want, your mind has trouble. It’s now experiencing something it doesn’t want to experience.

But you did it. You did it. A great master does not do that. An enlightened being—everything comes in and passes right through. They can bring it back and think about it a little bit, and pass right through. How would you like that? Okay? When you want to think about something, you bring it back, like a computer.

I don’t want to sit there and play with a computer that’s dumping stuff all over the place by itself. It’s supposed to be something you bring back out of memory when you want to do something with it. That’s what happens to you. You stored this stuff in here with all this resistance and power, and so on, and it keeps popping back up and causing trouble.

That’s why the mind says what it says, why it does what it does. That’s why it gets in trouble. The more you suppress, the more you repress, the more you store that stuff down there, it’s like a virus. It just—whoa, you’re in trouble, aren’t you? Okay? That’s why. It is not because of what’s happening outside.

That’s not why you’re in trouble. It’s because you couldn’t handle it before, when it happened, and you built this whole model of how you think it needs to be for you to be okay. Do you have one of those? Do you or do you not have a model in your mind of how things need to be for you to be okay? And the same for the opposite side of that—how they cannot be, or you’re going to be not okay.

And now your mind’s running around with that model, yes or no, so you think you know what you want. You think you know what you want. How about I say what you want is for the mind not to do that? That’s what you want. You want to have a clear, empty mind that’s able to handle reality. You still deal with it, but you don’t push it away and store it and say, “I can’t handle this.”

Does your mind ever say, “I can’t handle this”? Has your mind ever said, “I can’t handle this”? That’s your mind saying that. You can obviously handle it. It’s just an experience. Don’t worry, you won’t be here very long—80, 90 years. You can handle it. But your mind says, “I can’t handle it.” Why? Because you had past experiences that bothered you.

You suppressed them, and you built this whole “I can’t handle it” model, and then you also built—I have to give this fair time, I don’t want to—a model that says, “This is what I want.” Do you understand how wrong you are when your mind says, “This is what I want”? Where did you get the idea, “This is what I want”?

You watched a Disney show when you were young, and you wanted to be a princess or something, I don’t know. You’ve had impressions that you held onto, not just bad ones—I guarantee you 99% are bad ones, because they distract you tremendously, the ones that don’t feel good, the ones that have difficulty, and you hold onto them, and then they hit each other, and it really gets pretty negative, doesn’t it?

I always say we’re spiritual people, right, we’re supposed to practice positive thinking. Why? Because if we don’t, it’s pretty negative. Really, what does positive thinking mean? It means, if I’m not practicing—oh God, okay, it’ll be okay, yes, I love her, and I love God. If you’re not doing that, what’s your mind doing?

Come on, tell me the truth. And then, okay. That’s why the mind is broken. It’s broken because you stored everything in it that you didn’t like, and you kept it at a distance. When it comes back up, you keep it at a distance again. “What about stuff I did like? I have to give it a fair time.” Here’s what happens to things that you do like.

Ready? You want something to happen again. You sure? Things you really like—you want them to happen again? Guess what? They can’t happen again. They can’t happen again, because you were new to having that experience. That’s the first time you heard that song. That’s the first time he or she said, “I love you.” It will not feel the same for four years every time they say, “I love you.”

There is a way you can, by the way—I’m not talking against relationships, but you know darn well that the more you experience something, the less impact it has on you. Therefore, to say “I really like this, I want it to happen again,” you just set up a problem in your mind. Okay, now it’s going to start comparing whether this is the same as what it was last time.

The food at the restaurant was so good, but they’re not having the same special, and it’s not the same cook, and the waiter is not as cute as he was last time, and they’re not playing the same music. Right or wrong, you start comparing… I keep talking to you like this, all right, but I have to—I’m a teacher, all right?

You start comparing the experience that you held onto, not the experience you had. You ought to have an experience—welcome, something new will happen all the time, have fun. No, that’s not what you do. You cling to it—that’s the Buddhist term. You cling to it because you liked it. Now what? Now you compare everything against that.

Does it ever really work ever again, right? Isn’t there always something a little bit wrong from the way it was last time? You’re comparing everything, and you say, “I guess you don’t love me as much as you did.” “Why?” “Because it doesn’t feel the same as it did the first time you kissed me.” I wonder why. It’s not the first time I kissed you, and it will never, ever be the first time I kissed you, will it?

It’s new. This is the second time I kissed you. Isn’t it fun? “No, I liked the first time.” You tell me, am I exaggerating, or is that not the craziness that goes on in there? So that which you stored that you didn’t like, and that which you stored that you did like, made your mind be the way it is. Remember, we’re talking about mind, and you’re in there, and you know it’s that way, okay?

And so is everybody else’s. Don’t worry about it. Do you ever worry? Do you know what worrying is? Anybody know anything about worrying? Okay. You don’t want something to happen, so you worry that it might. You want something to happen, you worry it might not. Well, that’s pretty easy to do—I mean, it might not.

It might. So now we’re not going to deal with what happened. Can I deal with it? Now, can I have a thought about what happened that I didn’t like and not be bothered by it? That was a long sentence, but you heard me, and the answer is, no, I can’t. If I have that thought, it bothers me. Now do you understand mind?

That is how your mind got the way it is. That is not its natural state. What’s its natural state? The world is unfolding. It is coming in through your senses. You are experiencing it as it passes through your nervous system, and then it renders in your mind. There are so many things I’d love to talk to you about, but I can’t do it.

There’s so little time. Things come in. The event doesn’t come in. Light comes in, sound comes in, and you get to experience it, right? I did this the other day—I’ll do it for a second, right? You do understand, because you’re intelligent, that you are not looking at me through your eyes. Your eyes are not portals, windows, that the self looks out and sees what’s out there.

That is not what’s happening. “Well, what do you mean? I’m looking at you.” No, you’re not. What’s happening is there are atoms out there, and some keep the shape of my little body, and when light hits them, they reflect back, refract back, and that light hits your optical nerves, stimulates them, and then passes those patterns of light back into your brain and renders them in your mind.

So what you see as me, or you, or the wall, and so on—that’s happening inside, not outside. Do you know that all of science agrees with me? There’s nothing going on out there but light hitting atoms, hitting molecules. Well, what if there wasn’t light? Then you wouldn’t see anything. That’s called being dark. Turn the lights off.

That’s a fun thing to think about, right? Turn the lights off, and you’re not there anymore. I don’t know—I don’t see you. I don’t see you. Why? Because the truth is, light just bounces off of stuff. Take the light away, you ain’t seeing squat. And that goes for sight, sound, all the senses—they’re just picking up vibrations, passing them back, and the key, what I’m talking about, is your mind is so brilliant that you don’t see it as atoms.

You don’t see it as light patterns. They come in, and your mind builds them in your mind like a TV screen. It builds this. You’re sitting back here looking at a movie of that. Your eyes are sensors. They pick up something, and it gets sent back to you. Your mind renders it to look like this. That’s the function of mind—it picks up light that’s passing through, that stimulates the nerves, the patterns pass through, and when it hits the mind, not the brain, when it gets back into the mind, a subtle energy recreates this scene, and you’re sitting back there looking at this.

Why am I talking about that? Because this is mind. Your mind has a purpose. That’s quite a purpose, okay? So your mind has a function. But if you stop the picture and push pause, what happens if you’re watching a movie and push pause? You don’t get to see the rest of the movie. You push pause. You’re pushing pause all the time.

“I don’t like it, I don’t want to think,” blah blah blah, and you’re holding, and you’re building something inside the mind that was not meant to be built like that. Mind is the receptor of all the ability to see life—sight, sound, touch, all that kind of stuff comes in, and your mind is gifting you, you the self in there, is gifting you the experience of life.

But if you hold onto what already happened and push pause all the time, you know, all these little pictures floating around on the screen—how would you like to watch TV like that? Every single thing you ever thought that you held onto is a picture on that screen. It’s all very confusing in here.

It’s in here. I’m glad I talked about it, because I know you have to contemplate what it means that you are not looking out through your eyes. I’ve talked about it enough—I want you to contemplate it. I’m watching a ball game out in San Francisco. It comes in, goes to satellites, all this stuff, and then it renders on my flat-screen TV.

Is the ball game actually in there? It looks like it is. It rendered it on the screen. You are back in there watching that screen of your mind’s energy, the mental plane, recreating—hopefully well—recreating what came in. And so there’s your mind. That’s a basic function of mind, to do that. And so basically, now you come down to: what if you suppress?

What if you hold on? What if you cling? What if you resist? Then it gets stuck in that image, like having a stuck image on your TV screen. Say you turn the TV on to watch a movie, but every newscast you didn’t like, and every person, everything, was all stuck in there, right? You’ve got to look through all that. Is it fair that we dare to talk about the truth?

Is it not true? Okay, is your mind clearer? Now you understand what a clear mind means. You’re clear. There’s nothing stuck in there. You don’t come in there with preconceived notions of what you want to happen, what you don’t want to happen. You come in here to experience what’s happening. Be here now.

That’s how deep that is. It’s functioning the way it’s supposed to function. You’re experiencing reality. Who is? Me in here. What’s it like? Wow. There are butterflies, there are snakes, there are babies, and there’s never a dull moment, is there? It’s just coming in. Let it come in. “Hmm, but I didn’t like that.”

Okay, you can not like it, but let it go. It’s a stupid thing to do, to keep it because you didn’t like it. I just don’t understand it at all. “There’s the food. I ate the food, it made me really, really sick. Can I have a doggy bag, please?” And I do take it home, and I have a room called the sick room, and every single thing that ever made me sick before, I put it in the sick room, and every day I go in and take a little bit of each one.

No, not a little bit of each one—some jump up a little bit more than the other on a given day, and that’s what you’re doing, and that’s what you did by keeping that which you don’t like. Do you or do you not remember things you didn’t like more than neutral leaves, wind, rain, whatever? I can’t even say it, because you probably aren’t okay with leaves.

“I don’t like when they fall.” You’re probably not okay with rain. “Not on my birthday.” So I don’t know if there’s anything you’re okay with. It’s pretty messy in there, isn’t it? That’s why. It took me a while. Do you see why your mind is the way it is? That’s why it says what it says, why it complains when it complains, and there’s a magic part.

You go to that mess and say, “What should I do about the mess I now have? I’m so unhappy. I’m so depressed. I can’t do anything. I don’t know if I want to live.” Who’s telling you this? Your mind. It doesn’t have to be like that. It’s not supposed to be like that. And I talked about the mind—I don’t have to give a talk about the heart, because it’s the same thing.

The stuff you shoved down that you didn’t like got into the heart too, didn’t it? Okay, jealousy is not just a thought, it’s a feeling. It all polluted your psyche, and you’re running around with it, and then it’s telling you what to do. My favorite is, “No, I know I’m right. I know I’m right. I can feel it in my heart.”

I’m sorry, because what you feel in your heart—other than if you’re very clear, right—put your picture on the wall—what you feel in your heart is part of that stuff you shoved down there. “No, I’ve been talked to like that before. I just feel this tremendous anger and fear. It’s wrong. It’s wrong.”

Well, what if you didn’t ever get talked to like that before? What if it’s just somebody talking? “No, it sounded just like my mother, how she used to talk to me, and these emotions come up, don’t they?” All right? And can you trust them? You can’t trust a thing that’s going on in there till you’re clear. Go meditate for a while, get completely clear, and tell me whether you’re okay.

What is deep meditation? The self, the consciousness, is not being drawn down into the crazy mind and the crazy heart. It’s experiencing itself. It’s experienced what it’s like to be at peace, to be calm. Christ called it the peace that passes all understanding. What does that mean? It’s pretty understandable if you feel peace when you get what you want, isn’t it?

Everything’s just, “That’s the way I want it to be, I feel so peaceful and right about it. You know, okay.” The peace that passes all understanding is the one where, no matter what’s going on, you feel peace. So now, do you understand mind better now? That is what your mind is. If you listen to it, walking out of here, you’ll be listening.

“Well, what’s my choice?” You can get out, because it’s your mind. It’s not you, it’s something you’re experiencing. You can learn how to step back. Ultimately, if I take all the 55 years of growth, right—is it about stopping the mind? No, it’s not about stopping the mind. It’s about ceasing to be distracted by the mind.

Looked at another Baba, a very high being. Once said, “Oh, beloved ones, Baba now knows that the mind does not have to stop to enter samadhi.” Samadhi is the highest state of enlightenment. What does he mean? It means he’s not down there fighting with his mind. If it doesn’t distract you, what’s the difference what it’s doing?

Then it’s just like driving down the road with no girlfriends in the car—you’re just driving down the road. It doesn’t distract you. It doesn’t pull you down. If it doesn’t pull you down, you go up, and that’s what it’s saying. So the point is, the mind is not a problem. The problem is that you stored everything you didn’t like in there, and now you expect the world to match or not match.

It has become a problem. Well, believe it or not, you did it. I’m not blaming you. Don’t feel guilty because I said that. Don’t you dare do that, right? Who else is in there? Who’s in there with you? No one. Thank you. It’s a single-occupancy apartment in there, isn’t it? If it’s messy, I wonder who did it. If you live alone in your house and no one else lives there, and there’s pizza crust and bugs and roaches all over the place, I wonder who didn’t keep a clean house.

And this is what it means. You stored all this stuff in there, and now you’re sensitive, and now you worry, now you have anxieties and tensions because the world doesn’t match what I want. And then the mind goes crazy. Your mind can get weird about stuff, can’t it? The tiniest little thing. I was going to a flower show, and I was taking this beautiful rose that I grew by hand and took such care of, this perfect, perfect red rose, and I’m going to take it to the show, and you get up in the morning, you go to get it, and this stupid little ladybug got in there and chewed a little bit off the tip of my rose.

Are you okay? No, I’m not okay. I’m going to get my hands on that ladybug, and now I don’t know what to do. Should I go to the show anyway, right? Should I be like a creative artist and glue the ladybug on the edge and say, “Here’s real life?” I… What should… The mind’s going to go crazy, wouldn’t it? It wouldn’t stop thinking about it.

It may think about it for years. “I would’ve won that damn thing.” I hope you’re laughing—maybe I’m talking to the wrong audience, I don’t know. That is what you’ve done with your mind. Not purposely. It’s just hard to be comfortable with discomfort, isn’t it? How about that for a statement? It’s hard to be comfortable with discomfort.

If you’re not comfortable with discomfort, you push it away. Oh my God, he just said you store it. That’s what I do with my discomfort—I decide to store it because I’m not comfortable with it, right? Well, maybe it’s scary, I can learn to be comfortable with discomfort. How? By accepting discomfort. “By accepting—you just said something to me, I’m not sure what you meant by it, but it didn’t hit me just right.”

Wait till you see what your mind does with that. I guarantee you, I know what you said was negative, even though I admitted a moment ago I’m not sure what you meant. By the time your mind’s done with it, it will hit every single thing you ever stored, every objection you ever had, anytime I ever hurt you, and not to mention mother—she’ll come back up too.

So then, basically, you come to the point of, how do I get out? Yes, meditation’s wonderful. I don’t teach meditation—there are plenty of meditation teachers. What I teach is this: I teach why it’s good to meditate. Why? Because I would like you to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. When you learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable—and don’t get scared, we’ll take it slowly—

If you learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable, you don’t have to store it. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. So what happens to it? It’ll pass through. They asked Ramakrishna, a great enlightened master, “Does an enlightened master ever feel anger?” He shocked them, but then, “Oh my God, you’re an enlightened master.”

And he said, “Yes, but it’s like writing on water.” What’s the difference? You write on water, it doesn’t stay for a billionth of a second. The moment your finger goes down, it’s gone. That’s what he’s talking about. It can pass through. Have you ever had discomfort? Does it have to stay? There are women, all right—

I’m not picking on women, they’re the ones who have the babies, right—there are women who had a baby and it was uncomfortable. I hear tell it can be very uncomfortable, and they go back for seconds and thirds and fourths, and it’s worth it. It’s worth it. And there are some, “I’m never going through that ever again.

That was the worst experience of my life. It was so painful, no, no, nope.” Wow. What’s the difference? Can you handle being uncomfortable? Because sometimes you’re going to be uncomfortable. But let’s say a positive thing happens—can you handle that it might not happen again, or do you need to worry and manipulate and control to try to make it happen again?

Are you willing to experience reality? That’s what it comes down to. Are you willing to experience reality? If the answer is “it depends,” okay, then you’re not. You’re not willing to. And so, you know my teachings—I start… it sounds hard, I’ve been hard on you, I know. I start really simple: can you handle that it’s raining?

Don’t laugh, because you can’t. Wait, better yet—can you handle that it’s raining on your birthday, and you were planning on having a party outside? Or is your mind giving you trouble about that? Can you handle the driver in front of you just taking a left-hand turn without using his blinker? Nice blinker, buddy.

Can you handle life? Give me an answer. “No, not me, I can’t. I can if it’s the way I want it to be.” That’s a normal answer for mine. “I can handle it just fine if it’s the way I want it to be. I can’t handle it if it’s not the way I want it to be.” Can you learn to handle reality? Because that’s what life is—reality.

Reality, it happens. Things happen. Can you learn to handle reality? I can guarantee you, you can learn to handle reality. How? Don’t start with the big things that always bothered you—no, no, no, don’t worry about that. Start with the fact that it’s raining out and you don’t want it to be raining. It’s okay to not want it to be raining.

Can you handle that you don’t want it to be raining? Can it just be a moment in your life—into every life some rain must fall, okay? And you’re just, “Fine, it rained, I’ll play inside instead of outside.” Can you handle that? Can a driver be driving 15 miles an hour below the speed limit when you’re in a rush?

Can you handle it? Come on, be honest now. Do you ever talk to the driver in front of you? “Come on, buddy, you just passed a sign, it’s 55 miles an hour, you’re going 40. Come on, what’s the matter with you? And look at you, when are you going to let me pass? Every time I go to pass you, you…” Do you or do you not talk to the driver in front of you?

Does it do any good? Maybe we can learn to handle it. In my book, Living Untethered, I put it this way: I’m a businessman—we have studies called cost-benefit analysis, don’t you know about that, right? Cost-benefit. Well, to be bothered by the driver in front of you when you can’t pass—the benefit is zero, the cost is 100%.

You can learn to look at that, look at the mind, and say, “Really? Really, you’re going to do that about this?” You can have fun with it. It’s hot out—it’s so hot. You happen to be walking from the car to the house, and it’s hot. “Boy, where’s my violin? It’s really tough, right?” In the meantime, for the entire walk, “Oh, it’s so hot.

I’m melting. I can’t…” How about, what’s the cost-benefit analysis of that one? Cost 100%, benefit zero. Well, maybe don’t do it. Maybe you learn not to do it. How? By… you can use positive thinking. Look at the mind and say, “Hey, hello.” You can talk to your mind—it’s your mind, it always talks to you. You can talk to it.

You sit there and say, “Hey. Hi. Hey.” I used to do it, I don’t do it anymore, but I used to. “Hey, Mick. Hey. Hey, hey, mind. Hi, mind. Hi. Shh, wait, wait, wait a second. We’ll discuss this, all right? Is it hot out?” “Yeah.” “Is there anything you can do about it?” “No.” “Does complaining help?” “No.” “Does it make it worse?” “Yes.” “Then let’s have a little agreement:

we won’t do it anymore. When it’s really hot out, we’ll say, ‘I love the heat, it’s beautiful. I love the fact that there’s a star up there.'” “I can’t help myself.” There’s a star up there, 93 million miles… How far is Miami? Some of you guys are from Miami—what, 360 miles? That thing’s 93 million miles away, and you’re complaining about the heat?

How hot must that thing be? Wow. It’s a star, and you’re close enough to the star to feel its heat. Whoa. You could do that instead, couldn’t you? And you can do that with everything. Just start with the small things, okay? Guess what? When you start doing this, the mind’s happier, because it’s not complaining, all right?

It doesn’t figure out, “Do I need to move? Where is it not so hot? But I don’t like snow.” But what are you doing? You’ve just made a complete mess out of your life and out of your mind. And so, little by little, you can do it slowly, it’s fine. Little by little, stop it. Work with yourself to let go of the part of the mind that is a result of the fact that you stored all this garbage in there.

And what will happen, I guarantee you—they write me from all over the world—is that it will start to get nicer in there, and then it’ll get nicer. And then something else will happen that you used to be bothered by, and you will find you’re not bothered. Why? Because you’ve learned to handle discomfort.

Isn’t that a funny thing? No one will talk to you that way. They’re going to teach you how to cope and change everything. If it bothers you, change it. Go get your hair cut, and cut just a little bit, about a fraction of an inch more than you want. “Don’t ever go back there ever again. No, it wasn’t the way you wanted it to be.

Don’t you dare tell me it’s not that way.” You can’t handle any discomfort. You haven’t—you’ve run your whole life trying to avoid it. How about—I’m not talking about broken arms and legs or people abusing you, I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about simple stuff that you get bothered by.

How about practicing handling it? Oh, that’s so much fun, I guarantee you. Then it’ll get bigger and bigger. What will? The stuff that you can handle. And eventually—I’m going to stop, it’s hard, because I’ve got you, you hear me—eventually you will wake up in the morning and you’ll realize there’s not a single thing that happened today that I can’t handle.

I don’t have to worry about it. I don’t have to be psychic and figure it out. I don’t want to know the future. I don’t want to go to somebody who tells me what’s going to happen tomorrow. I don’t need a horoscope. I don’t care. It’s going to be fun. Why? Because I can handle it. “Well, what if it’s disturbing?”

Okay, then I’ll learn to handle that. If it’s really disturbing, that’s a level I haven’t learned to handle yet—it’ll put me up against a good pitcher, and I can learn to bat against them. They’re just challenges. Does it mean you don’t deal with them? You deal with them, but not because you’re not okay.

When you’re not okay with something, you’re the wrong person to deal with it. When you say, “I can’t handle this,” well, then somebody else had better do it, because you just admitted you can’t. It has to be, “I can handle it, bring it on, because I grow every time I’m challenged.” Every time I’m challenged, if I work with it, I become a more open person.

Mind gets clear that way. It’s exactly like meditation. If I can handle everything, then nothing bothers me. How would you like to know that nothing’s ever going to bother you for the rest of your life? That’d be a nice thing, wouldn’t it? So we’re not talking about controlling the mind. I started that way, didn’t I?

Now you understand what’s going on. You store all this garbage, it’s going to get hit. Welcome it. Welcome it up. Offer it up. Work with it.
