Acquisitions Editor (Remote)

Sounds True, a multimedia publisher of mind, body, and spirit titles, is seeking a full-time, experienced Acquisitions to help build our list of innovative and high-quality books that are in keeping with Sounds True’s mission and publishing strategy.

Responsibilities Include:
 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the psychology, relationships, health, healing, and self-help book marketplace and trends. The ideal candidate will have their finger on the pulse of hot new ideas on a broad spectrum of topics, including health and healing, transformational memoir, conscious parenting, creativity, spirituality, personal and professional wellness, conscious leadership and business, self-help and personal development
  • Acquiring and developmentally editing 12-15 new book projects annually as directed by the acquisitions team, and providing regular reporting of progress toward acquisitions and editorial goals
  • Writing catalog copy, jacket copy, and in-house positioning sales materials for each book acquired
  • Identifying potential authors, developing proposals, presenting new projects to the acquisitions team, and negotiating offers with authors and literary agents as necessary
  • Cultivating and managing relationships with authors and literary agents
  • Brainstorming, creating, and composing new project proposals for content and marketability
  • Researching and evaluating industry trends, competitive titles, and professional needs in the designated fields, including conference attendance and travel
  • Representing each book acquired through titling, creative direction, and subsequent editorial phases, including personally performing developmental editing and transmittal tasks for each title
  • Working closely with production editors and freelancers, as well as editorial assistants, production, marketing and sales, art/design, IT, and Contracts to meet acquisitions, development, and publishing goals

 

The ideal candidate:

 

  • You have a demonstrated record of acquiring books in the psychology, relationships, health & healing, and self-help categories, and an established author and agent network in these disciplines.
  • You have experience taking ideas and building books from the ground up—creating concepts, finding writers, shaping manuscripts, etc.—and managing all processes of book acquisition through publication.
  • You possess superior editorial judgment, excellent developmental editing skills, strong knowledge of these disciplines, and an independent and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • You are a trend-spotter. You possess a great deal of market-savvy that gives you the ability to know what’s next in terms of hot topics in our genre. And you have the ability to develop the best project positioning for each new title you acquire.
  • You are a voracious reader of books and articles on personal development—and you are passionate about fresh ideas that will help people thrive, live authentically, improve their health, and improve their relationships.

Requirements:

 

  • Minimum 5-6 years of relevant editorial experience
  • Established agency contacts
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Strong, succinct presentation skills

Customer Service Admin Specialist (20 hours per week)

Sounds True, a multimedia publisher specializing in spirituality and holistic living, located in Louisville, CO, has a part-time time (20 hours per week) opening for an energetic, positive and responsible individual to join our Customer Service team. This position will support the Customer Service Special Projects Supervisor to help manage special projects on the Customer Service team. This role will take lead ensuring all facets related to customer Sounds True scholarships queries are handled including reviewing, approving, denying, communicating with customers on their queries via the Sounds True Foundation, processing scholarship requests, and managing all issues/logistics tied to scholarships. The CS Special Projects Coordinator will also assist with any projects assigned by the CS Manager.

Note: While we are currently working remote, the ideal candidate must have the ability to be onsite daily once we return to the office.

 
Primary responsibilities:
 
  • Efficient and timely review to all Sounds True customer scholarship requests
  • Communicate to all Sounds True scholarship queries regarding approval, partial approval and denial requests along with next steps
  • Offers support to the Special Projects supervisor
  • Offers support with Eckhart Tolle scholarship inquiries as time permits
  • Communicates with CS team and/or Special Projects Supervisor on scholarship request status
  • Back up phone and email support for Customer Service Team
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

 

  • 1+ years work experience in a similar position
  • Proficient knowledge of customer service and standard office practices
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Strong people skills along with an excellent phone etiquette

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excel intermediate skills a plus: Vlookups, pivot tables, etc.
  • Interest in our mission and product line is a plus!

Customer Service Agent

Responsibilities:
Assisting customer requests via phone, email, and chat in a friendly, professional, and helpful manner. Requests may include:

    • Providing first-tier technical support with our digital products.
    • Offering product recommendations.
    • Account reconciliation, processing orders, and refunds.
    • Researching and reporting technical issues.

 

Recommended Skills/Qualifications:

 

  • 1+ years of previous customer service or call center experience.

Publicity Director

The Publicity Director personally develops and executes high-impact national media campaigns for 20+ Sounds True books per year, while also overseeing the Publicity Manager’s 20+ book campaigns. This role secures media coverage to influence book sales and additional media opportunities, attracts new authors, and builds brand awareness in the marketplace. The Publicity Director also contributes to the overall editorial and publicity strategy for Sounds True.

 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Secure national and regional media for Sounds True’s titles and authors
  • Maintain strong media relationships with national digital, print, and broadcast contacts
  • Attend weekly acquisitions meetings, and offer ideas/feedback on current and future editorial projects
  • Independently plan and execute high-level author tours, including large-scale ticketed public lectures and events, local book events, media interviews, and author travel
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with authors, agents, event coordinators, and booksellers
  • Manage two Sounds True employees to ensure consistent media coverage and creative pitching

  • Identify and oversee outside publicity firms and freelancers for various campaigns

  • Schedule in-person meetings with media to maintain brand awareness and facilitate ongoing publicity support
  • Create persuasive press materials, including press releases, pitch letters, author Q&A’s, and story ideas
  • Thoughtfully tailor pitches to current media events and media outlets’ demographics and content tone
  • Collaborates with marketing and sales teams on campaign execution

  • Accompany authors to interviews and bookselling events

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in book publishing and public relations

  • Must have solid media relationships and knowledge of the diverse media landscape

  • Ability to prioritize, work independently, and manage multiple campaigns and responsibilities

UX Researcher

We are seeking an experienced UX Researcher to join our Product Management team.

They will be responsible for helping define and drive the future of our Sounds True web and mobile platforms that are integral to the delivery of products to our customers. They will reveal what our users need from our platforms and our digital products by conducting research, working with cross-functional teams, and performing usability studies. These responsibilities also include inspiring change, delivering oral and written presentations, evaluating qualitative and quantitative data, and helping the Sounds True product and platform teams to better understand what would make a user’s experience more intuitive, accessible, and seamless with our mobile application, course platforms, and web platforms.
 
They will create understanding and empathy around customer and user needs, stated and unstated, for our entire Sounds True product and publishing teams including designers, product managers, and developers.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • UX Research
    • Identify and prioritize UX research opportunities across the organization, anticipate, and balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
    • Communicate, defend, and build consensus across diverse teams regarding customer beliefs and needs
    • Understand the strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during the platform development process
    • Design, collect, and analyze customer data through various research methods, such as: usability studies (including live and remote), user interviews, surveys, A/B and multivariate tests, Google Analytics data, and heat/click maps, and scroll maps. Usability studies may include the use of paper-prototypes, interactive prototypes, and fully-released digital products
    • Determine statistical relevance of research data and be able to draw accurate conclusions which will inform current and future product designs and design practices, establish product benchmarks, and identify potential areas of improvement
  • Interaction Design
    • Understand Sounds True’s business needs, platform requirements, and customer research and transform that understanding into user-focused and intuitive products, device interfaces, and platforms for mobile, desktop and web.
    • Create user flows, product wireframes, prototypes, and low-fidelity mock-ups.
    • Influence product pattern libraries, UI states, and animations.

  • Web Accessibility
    • Work with teams across the company to implement WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines in order to ensure all customers can access and use our digital products.
    • Oversee auditing of our digital platforms and products using several different methods: automated screening, code review, and screen reader testing (Voice Over and/or JAWS).
    • Partner with third-party vendors to evaluate our digital products and facilitate the work to bring our products into compliance.
    • Educate and promote the practice of building products with accessibility in mind, as well as mentor others in methods and techniques for addressing accessibility barriers.
  • Customer Research
    • Manage the Sounds True Customer Advisory Board Management and conduct targeted focus groups and user testing for product acquisitions, innovation, and platform development.
    • Conduct customer-focused Product and Platform Research and Surveying in partnership with B2B Managing Editor, B2C Product Line Manager, and Platform Owner
    • Create and disseminate Quarterly customer and product usage reports
    • Conduct targeted Market Research on potential customer segments and markets for both product and platform purposes
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for WCAG guidelines and stay informed of new guidelines as they evolve

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Psychology, HCI/Computer Science, Communication Design, a related field or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation and collaboration skills

    • You will be presenting your research work to various teammates and occasionally to large sections of the company. Presentation and public speaking skills are required
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision
