Mindfulness As Taught by the Buddha

In the words of the Buddha, the four foundations of mindfulness (the four satipatthanas) are "the direct path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of dukkha (suffering) and discontent, for acquiring the true method, for the realization of Nibbana."

Within the quintessential discourse called the Satipatthana Sutta, we find the Buddha's seminal teachings on the practice of meditation. On Abiding in Mindfulness, Insight Meditation Society cofounder Joseph Goldstein presents a three-volume, 32-CD audio curriculum to reveal the deeper insights of this vital sutta, and how it serves to inform and guide your own daily practice.

In-Depth Study of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness

Volume 1 introduces you to the first satipatthana, the domain of the body, leading us to a clearer understanding of the elements and energies that make up our physical form. Volume 2 takes us to the second foundation, mindfulness of feelings, as we explore how to achieve deeper happiness and ease of being through moment–by–moment mindfulness of our feeling states. Volumes 2 and 3 illuminate the third foundation, known as mindfulness of mind. Then we conclude this landmark work with a thorough investigation of the fourth foundation, mindfulness of dhamma, or the "categories of phenomena" that we experience.

After four decades studying and practicing the Satipatthana Sutta, Joseph Goldstein concludes that the seeds of all the Buddha's teachings are contained within this revered text. Abiding in Mindfulness is an unprecedented audio series for anyone walking the Buddha's path to happiness and fulfillment.

Indispensable Review by Jeb

Consumer Orientation: This collection is appropriate for anyone with a very serious interest in meditation. The content is probably most resonant for Theravadin Buddhists, but I would personally recommend the set to Buddhists of any persuasion, as well as to anyone in pursuit of the ultimate goal of enlightenment.

Value: The set contains a very comprehensive analysis of the Satipatthana Sutta and serious meditators will find Goldstein's insights and guidance to be both thought-provoking and helpful.

Strengths: Goldstein's treatment of the material is comprehensive and his command of it is extraordinary. Goldstein is a likeable speaker who is easy to listen to, and the course itself is well-structured.

Weaknesses: The richness of the material can make it cognitively demanding at times. (Realistically, though, this problem is probably unavoidable, given the profound nature of the subject matter.) Be advised that the recording could stand to be better equalized in parts, and that you may need to adjust the volume at times in order to compensate for this.

Notes: This set will be most appreciated by people who enjoy intense philosophical contemplation. I would probably not recommend it to beginning meditators or to people who are not particularly interested in the intricacies of Buddhist thought.

Review for Abiding in Mindfulness Collection Review by John B

I bought the two sets several years ago. I listened to them the first time through while working for months on remodeling part of my home. Then, this past year I took them out and listened again. This was after studying this sutra by other authors and from other lineage holders. I am now listening to these talks over and over having downloaded to my iPod. Each time something new is revealed.
