The Buddha said many times that just as the great oceans have but one taste, so do all the true teachings of the dharma: the taste of freedom. Jack Kornfield's The Roots of Buddhist Psychology is an invitation to drink deeply of these teachings to taste the wisdom that flows from the heart of Buddhism's most useful ideas about the interior life, and what brings awakening, freedom, and happiness.
Among the world's great religions, Buddhism alone has developed a rich, intricate psychology based not on metaphysics, but on the human predicament. Through its strategies, you can find the way to true freedom.
Buddhism views the mind as a labyrinth of feelings, perceptions, and emotional states. Unhappiness is rooted in unskillful responses to our world: grasping when things are pleasant, aversion when they are unpleasant, and delusion/confusion when they are neutral. Through awareness training, Kornfield teaches, you can transform these responses into real skills that are the path to true happiness. This is the way to inner stillness—the deathless state that allows your wisdom and compassion to flow together for a state of greater knowing.
Enlivened with many parables, worldly stories, and thoughts from artists, philosophers, and writers, The Roots of Buddhist Psychology can help you to discover for yourself that what you seek is already here.

Sound quality poor Review by Naomi
I don't like to complain, but I have to say that the sound quality on this recording (audio download) is poor. There is a constant "fuzzy" sound, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the speaker's voice. I was really looking forward to this program, so I am a bit disappointed. I could manage an hour-long program of this sound quality, but I can't see myself getting through 8 hours of it. I wonder if the quality could be improved somehow? (Posted on November 27, 2015)

the title sounds kinda academic, but this is really just a great storyteller talking about the experience of life using anecdotes from writers, spiritual figures, artists and his own life. wonderful. one of my ST top 10. (Posted on September 4, 2014)

I love these teachings of Jack Kornfield and have listened to them for years. This purchase was a gift for my niece who is a family counselor and art therapist and she loved receiving them. The clarity of the teachings, the inclusions of wonderful quotations from poetry and literature, the humor and compassion for all beings is so evident throughout the tapes. Jack Kornfield presents this talk with little clear direction. More than a historical look it is basically an unfocused presentation. Bought it on Audible and returned it. (Posted on April 25, 2014)

The Roots of Buddhist Psychology is suburb! Jack Kornfield is the most amazing presenter. His wisdom and goodness are ever present. I actually listened to this on cassettes years ago and wanted to hear it again. How fortunate for me that it was on sale. Jack's books and tapes have mentored me for over 25 years--tho he doesn't know it. I so highly recommend The Roots of Buddhist Psychology. (Posted on April 11, 2014)

This series was my first exposure to the Buddhist Philosophies, and it was so many years past thst I believe that it was on cassette tape! Dr Kornfield is an inspiring Teacher with an easy style and quite formidable breadth of knowlege. His work has sustained me through passages, both easy and some less so. My hope is one day to be able to meet and thank him for his Efforts. (Posted on September 7, 2012)
