When Saint Patrick first came to Ireland in the 5th century AD, he encountered the Celtic people—with their flourishing spiritual tradition, already thousands of years old. Where the Christians worshiped one God, the Celts had many—and in fact, found divinity all around them: in rivers and hills, the sea and sky, and in every kind of animal.

The Celtic reverence for the spirit in all things, and their celebration of the continuous mysteries of everyday existence, survive to this day—a vibrant spiritual legacy unique in the Western world. On Anam Cara, Irish poet and scholar John O'Donohue blends philosophy, instruction, and spiritual insight, taking you inside this remarkable spiritual synthesis.

O'Donohue shares secrets from a world where the Fates are not feared, and where God's passionate side is celebrated. These secrets will help you to reconnect with the world around you and the treasures hidden within your soul.

Course objectives:

  • List some central beliefs of Celtic wisdom
  • Compile a list of poems that offer hope and inspiration
  • Recite myths and legends from Celtic history
  • Discuss new perspectives on life, work and death

In the oral tradition so beloved of the Celts, O'Donohue shares an intuitive approach to spirituality that takes you beyond spiritual "programs" to a place where your heart can be truly nourished and healed. You will learn authentic Irish prayers and blessings; how to discover your individual nature; awakening the senses as "thresholds of the spirit"; understanding the "secret divinity" in your relationships; how the Irish "hospitality" toward death can help you become more compassionate, generous, and fearless; and much more.

Tracing the cycles of life and nature, this insightful session draws from the holy waters of Ireland's spiritual heritage—from the Celts and their Druid shamans, the imbas (inspirational sagas) of the wandering bards, and the sacred fountainhead of the Christian monasteries. Join John O'Donohue for a journey to the "island of saints and scholars" where you will discover your own Anam Cara—"soul friend."

Lovely! Review by Shirley

Maybe we all have different truths... I experienced this as the truth of life and death, I had my 'aha' moment of understanding which brought peace to my heart and a new way to move forward. I wish to say that I regret not finding this sooner in my life, but then, perhaps, I wasn't ready for it. It is never too late to become one's true self and I have a renewed sense of hope and possibility. I will pass this on to all those I care about, friends and family. Lovely and profound!
Also, there are readers and there are readers, John O'Donohue has a voice of soothing clarity that one can listen to endlessly.
Thank you. (Posted on March 26, 2017)

Outstanding awareness of Celtic truths Review by Joey the Birdman

I drank this as a thirsty child. I was overwhelmed with the beauty and the intensity of the Celtic understandings shared here. The wit and poems wove understanding into my heart. I am so grateful for this understanding.
Absolutely wonderful tonic for my heart and soul, and I am German! (Posted on January 7, 2016)

excellent, provocative, inspiring Review by joy

Wish I'd found Anam Cara sooner although I may not have been able to get thru it as a younger woman. He had so much to share; many ideas to try out and toss around to see how they fit. Celtic or not very valuable insight. I look forward to ordering more of his work.

I do have a concern, the audio book didn't come with a bibliography and he references several authors and books. One in particular on the 7th cd I simply can't make out. Sounds like he is saying Marchino Kine (author) and titled Craine or Crane Killer, about life in the graveyard. I could find no other way to pose this question which is why it is here in a review. Would appreciate any input.

I am a long time fan and customer of Sounds True. Never disappointed, always leaves me wanting more! (Posted on August 10, 2015)
