Essential Skills for a Full and Courageous Life
When you think about personal transformation, do you have a picture of who you want to become? Many of us unconsciously create an idealized image of our “awakened” selves—and in doing so, reveals David Whyte, we undermine both the work and reward of genuine transformation.
On What to Remember When Waking, this celebrated poet and teacher offers wisdom for building the essential disciplines that will see us through the difficulties of our human journey—skills of trust, vulnerability, momentum, and courage in the face of the unknown.
Engage in the Great Conversation That Defines Your Life
Our lives are defined by what David Whyte calls the “great conversation”—a give- and-take relationship between our vision of ourselves and the unfolding mystery of reality. Yet there are many conscious and unconscious ways that we often avoid living at this ever-moving frontier. Do you diminish life by attempting to assign names to everything instead of living more robustly with the unknown? Are you turning a blind eye to the invisible help that is all around you? With penetrating insight and gentle guidance, Whyte illuminates the core competencies that you must build in order to fully engage in the richness that life offers—and to express your true work in the world.
What You Can Plan Is Too Small for You to Live
“We do not always move forward because of the plans we make or the effort we expend,” teaches David Whyte. “The conversation itself more often does the true work of transformation.” Make sure the conversation is alive and everything takes its place. Combining a teacher’s ability to provide practical guidance with a poet’s insight into the depths of the human soul, he presents a powerful resource for anyone seeking growth and fulfillment on life’s journey with What to Remember When Waking.

Sleep Inducing Review by Ordinary Gal
I wasn't able to finish this program, because of Whyte's soporific voice. I always feel as if I've missed out on something when my opinion differs from rave reviews. I did not find the insights nor poetry mind-blowing. I am glad that Mr. Whyte has a loyal audience; it's obvious he works hard at his craft. That audience is not me. (Posted on October 31, 2017)
Life Changing Review by creative1
This program is saving my life...again. Every time I listen to it, it reals me back in from the brink of despair. Cannot recommend it enough! (Posted on September 19, 2016)
Best Audio Book Review by Karen
I have listened to this several times, and even loaned it out to friends. It is like a warm hug from a wise grandfather who happens also to be a great storyteller. It is lovely, interesting, and insightful.
Each time you listen, it gets better. I am an avid audio book listener, and this is my all time favorite. If I could rate beyond 5 stars, I would. (Posted on December 20, 2015)
Amazing depth Review by LovingLife
Wonderful. I've listened to this several times, and loaned it out to friends who also listened a few times. It is just that good. So much wisdom. Lovely storytelling. (Posted on November 27, 2015)
Like the waves Review by NEO
I began listening to this programme while in Goa a few months ago and got into the practice of listening to him as I walked on the beach every evening. His voice, the content, the poems felt like soothing stories and yet the weird part is: I don't remember much of what he said. It feels like smoke or rather incense. I don't remember a word of wisdom or message or even a psychological insight! All I remember are little fragments like when he was walking on a mountain in the rain, or when he was apprenticing in a music shop and such..It's quite mysterious as this is not what normally happens with me. I am wondering what is it and will listen again in a few months.
Bless you David. (Posted on April 4, 2015)
Excellent Review by Jane
I've long been an admirer of David Whyte's work. This 6 CD set offers even more sound, life enriching ideas we can apply to our lives, thereby enhancing our existence. David presents the work in his usual mesmeric way; one simply cannot stop listening. Thank you. (Posted on November 30, 2014)

Review for What to Remember When Waking Review by Jody Day
Wonderful content but why, oh why aren't there any chapter breaks? It makes it much easier to listen to and dip back into if there are. I love David's voice and his insights are quite unlike anyone else's... and I love how much I learn about poetry along the way... He is an exceptional teacher and I feel petty for moaning about the lack of structure/chapter breaks, but you asked for feedback and I think it's a bit rambling! (Posted on March 23, 2014)
Review for What to Remember When Waking Review by Donald Miller
I love his poetry and love hearing him read. I own all of his books and CD. I do poetry healing workshops and teach and do weddings and funerals with his poetry. However when I met him and went up to appreciate him he was very rude and seemed more interested in the young women. (Posted on February 5, 2014)
