It is possible to access the same sense of well-being, clarity, inner freedom, and loving connection realized by the world’s meditation masters. We can do this by shifting our awareness in the midst of our daily lives. Shift into Freedom presents innovative teacher Loch Kelly’s training manual for actively participating in the evolution of your own consciousness.

Synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world’s contemplative traditions, Shift into Freedom offers an accessible and remarkably powerful series of meditations that lead us to a little-known natural capacity called “awake awareness.” Through an unfolding process of “small glimpses, many times,” these exercises shift us from a thought-based knowing to an awareness-based way of operating in the world. With continued practice, we learn to “unhook” from our customary home in our ego-based identity—and then sustain an embodied presence and relatedness known as “open-hearted awareness.” Loch Kelly teaches that this is “the meeting place of awakening and growing up, where we have the capacity to handle a fully emotional, intimate life and act with authenticity and compassion.”

Learn more about:

  • How to separate awareness from thinking to realize that thoughts and emotions are not the center of who we are
  • How insights from neuroscience can help us learn how to embody awakening
  • Ego-identification, a pattern of thought that co-opts the body’s boundary program and creates a mistaken identity
  • The paradox of “being home while returning home”
  • Finding the off-switch for the chattering mind
  • How to intentionally and immediately shift into peace of mind any time of your day
  • Awakening as a natural process of human development, which unfolds as waking up, waking in, and waking out
  • Meditation practices for all phases of the journey of awakening and embodiment
  • Four stages of spiritual growth: recognition, realization, stabilization, and expression
  • Untying the “knots” in our mindbody system to liberate us from our deepest doubts and fears
  • How to move from deliberate mindfulness to effortless mindfulness and heart mindfulness
  • How to effortlessly focus without using attention
  • Discovering your innate happiness that is not dependent on circumstances
  • How to welcome and liberate sub-personalities after initial awakening
  • A user’s manual for your consciousness to help you free yourself from the limits of ego-identification and live from open-hearted awareness

Not only does Loch describe our natural state as "awake awareness" he describes how to access this state easily and directly Review by linsky
Rating

This book is a game-changer. Not only does Loch Kelly describe our natural state as "awake awareness" he describes how to access this state easily and directly. No requirements for hours of daily meditation for years in order to achieve a transcendent state only a few can reach. Rather, Loch gives many simple exercises that offer "small glimpses" directly into our natural state. These "small glimpses" can be done anytime anywhere; so the simple practice of "small glimpses" many times allows me to experience myself as who I really am, not the "mini-me" in my head. And these practices are not only for myself to experience my own awake awareness; it is meant to flow through my heart to others as "open-hearted awareness." I recommend this book highly. I also recommend experiencing a retreat with Loch in person; he is the "real deal", he models what he teaches.

The most important book of our times. Review by Pam Paulson
Rating

I believe this is the most important book that I have ever read. Mr. Kelly has distilled and simplified the process of "enlightenment" into a set of exercises that will really allow you to directly experience the shift from ego based consciousness to a state of pure awareness. I have spent my whole life seeking a change in consciousness and to be honest I did not have the discipline to "follow" a spiritual tradition. I am so relieved to know that this does not have to be the case. I always suspected it could be simpler.

On the first day of starting to read the book and do the exercises, I experienced a strong shift. I have suffered from severe depression throughout my life so the shift was a definite and welcome contrast. I suggest you go to Youtube to utilize Loch's videos for the written exercises. He is not teaching theory here, this is experiential.

These techniques could change the world and could be taught to almost anyone. I want to say, thank you, Loch Kelly, your efforts have made a huge difference in my life.

Tremendous book - highly recommended! Review by Jim Corcoran
Rating

In this wonderful book, Loch Kelly does a masterful job of presenting ancient teachings in an accessible modern western vernacular, intertwining them with current psychology and the latest scientific learnings, along with proving practical guided practices to enable the reader to find out in their own experience what freedom and awakening is - which is the most important thing. I also just attended a workshop with Loch at NYI and he is a very gifted teacher. Highly recommended! Namaste!

This is life changing! Review by Morid
Rating

A truly inspirational guide to a truer way of living daily life. This book is a real gem and has helped me find peace in myself and the world around me. The practical techniques and exercises, which Kelly astutely calls "glimpses," allowed me to slowly work toward a state of open-hearted awareness. There is an "aha" moment early in the book where I recognized the difference between my ego-identification and true self. There is a huge sense of relief that follows this and soon after I began to understand awake awareness and the importance of it. With practice, I am able to live increasing amounts of daily life from this true self in a state akin to "Flow" or coming home. This is life changing!

Sad! Review by Holub

It always makes me sad when a meditation teacher tells his students that everybody can skip the first 10 or so stages of meditative development and go straight to the highest stages... What a terrible misconception of your "quick-fix times!"

A guidebook to Being Review by Ann Mcneal
Rating

Two things I love most about Loch's approach to awake awareness: 1) It's about being in the real world while also aware of the spaciousness of open awareness. 2) It's about direct access to awareness, not spending 20 years in a cave, but learning how to open to that sense of OK-ness that most of us have already experienced at one time or another.

In this book, Loch first gives an overview of his approach in Chapter 1, and then goes in depth into different aspects. His writing is clear and engaging, with sly puns and other evidence of his sense of humor. At the end of each chapter is a set of "Glimpse Practices" that can give us clear pointers to awareness. My favorite example is the question, "What is here now, when there is no problem to be solved?" This question takes me directly to a sense of spaciousness and ease.

Some quotes from the book:
"Intellectually understanding awakening is like having a strand of Christmas lights; directly experiencing awakening is like plugging them in."
"In this approach, awakening begins with a direct recognition but then has a gradual unfolding. It is not instant enlightenment or an escape from the human condition."

Wonderful Guide to Awakening Review by Ann
Rating

This book is a wonderful resource for awakening. Loch talks about five levels of consciousness and shows us how to move between them, using thought as a tool rather than as an identity. His instructions go beyond the level of consciousness associated with secular mindfulness and take us all the way to unity. The section on contemporary scientific understanding of consciousness satisfies the curious mind, and the practices are clear and specific enough to bring about real transformation.

Phenomenal and Practical! Review by Nishant Patel
Rating

Loch Kelly has provided humanity with a profound, yet practical means for each individual to come to a deep recognition of their essential nature while still incorporating psychological development. Loch is clear and concise and yet provides a wide breadth of information that looks at science and wisdom and the ways in which they relate. There are a wide range of practices in the book that offers each individual the opportunity to see what resonates for them and works for them. What I appreciate most about the book is that Loch goes into the nuances that can occur as we shift into the various levels of mind and ultimately into awake awareness. This allows for the book to serve as a guide that can be picked up numerous times from the book shelf to allow for a deeper resonance to occur each time it is revisited.

Simply put, this book is simple in its elegance and practical and inviting. Loch's experience working as both a psychotherapist and spiritual teacher are evident and this book will surely support those interested for years to come.

The learnable shift Review by Samantha
Rating

I have been waiting for this treasure of a book for a while now. Besides the clear, helpful, almost graphic expositions, in it one finds a wide variety of well-designed pointers which aid us in making the shift into recognizing the awareness, peace and joy that we fundamentally are. The author tells us this shift can be learned, a rare approach.

Loch Kelly is an effective, sophisticated yet practical teacher, with a solid intellectual and experiential ground. This book reflects just that.

A Journey Worth Taking... Review by Christopher P.
Rating

Having heard Loch speak and teach in person, his new book and CD are the next-best-thing to being there. Loch allows one to penetrate the noise and anxiety of modern life, and come to rest in an awareness state available to all at any time. As he teaches, this is a different place than where one goes when one's spiritual practice is to arrive at a deeply meditative state. When Loch's open-hearted awareness is practiced for a few minutes many times daily, it can have remarkable effects. An overall feeling of calm, rest, and peace follows each cycle of unhooking and dropping down. My own personal experience has included relief from chronic pain for hours at a time, and a reduction in my overall chronic pain (due to surgery many years ago) in my body on a daily basis. I highly recommend reading this book, listening to this CD, and seeking out Loch's teaching. Beyond meditation, beyond contemplation, and beyond any single-belief system, Shift Into Freedom is available to all in a simple set of easy to follow steps. It's a journey worth taking.

Life-changing Review by Healthybiker
Rating

I have just finished this book and continue on now with his audio glimpses. I'd been searching for something meaningful and lasting in my life for many years; I love Eckhart's Power of Now and everytime I get down in the dumps, I get on my bike and climb up into the hills with it in my ear. When I come back I'm 99% better, but his advice of, ..."always say yes to the present moment..." doesn't have the resonance to really stick, even though I wish it would.
Reading "Shift" has given me the hope that I will be able to stay present and switch out of the uncomfortable anxiety that I've suffered with since puberty; a reeling mind anytime I have to perform under pressure with someone watching me has been the norm for nearly 40 years now.
I know there is a honeymoon period to many things in life, but I feel that this beautifully-written book has given me so much ammunition to battle my habitual way of negative thinking, which is so deeply engrained. Loch, thank you for writing it and for making the recordings! I feel like a new chapter of confidence and clarity filled with awake awareness in my life has begun.

A Treasure. Review by Sam Bodian
Rating

Whatever led you to look at this book and skim through the reviews, I suggest that you trust that instinct, curiosity or whim and purchase it. Maybe you're interested in "Shift Into Freedom" because of an interest in meditation, psychology, Buddhism, self-discovery. Maybe you just saw the cover and felt drawn to the peaceful clouds and blue sky. Regardless of who you are or what angle you're approaching Loch Kelly's work from, this book is for you. As a meditator and psychologist in training, I can speak most directly to the value of "Shift Into Freedom" as an unparalleled meditation manual and psycho-educational text. There are many books on meditation and Buddhism out there - books written by great teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh, The Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron and so on. While their writings continue to inspire millions, they are written in broad strokes - generally emphasizing the importance of loving kindness, breathing meditation, relinquishment of attachment etc. While reading about these concepts is valuable and inspiring, I'm often left wondering about the specific details of the meditative practices that actually lead to the sort of awakenings and openings that these great teachers describe. Loch spells it out. If you want to learn meditation that goes beyond following the breath or mindfully brushing your teeth, this book is for you. You could sift through obscure meditation manuals written by Tibetan monks of antiquity, go join a Buddhist monastery, pay an experienced teacher hundreds of dollars for personal instruction, or you could read this book and engage in the "glimpse" practices that it offers. I recommend the latter choice.

Having studied with Loch, I have to say that I have learned more from his instruction than I have from any of the numerous meditation teachers and psychologists I've encountered over the years. There is a clarity and truth to what he teaches and how he teaches it that I cannot express in words. He is not a "guru" and as he readily admits, these teachings are not his own - they are the distillation of a few thousand years of inquiry into the nature of mind and reality, expressed in Loch's crystal clear words and unique voice.

Finally, I highly recommend getting the audiobook of the same title along with this text - while the guided meditations it contains are mostly spelled out in the book and can certainly be practiced without verbal instruction, hearing Loch offer each "glimpse" makes the practices exponentially easier - at times almost effortless. I could go on and on, but perhaps I should let the book speak for itself.

Beautiful, a treasure! Review by Steven Kimbrough
Rating

A great joy arose when I read Loch Kelly's definitive manual of non-meditation. This is simply the best book (in my humble opinion) ever written for the Western practioner and perhaps for all those in search for a way off the wheel of suffering and ignorance and back to our birthright of freedom. Mr. Kelly deftly navigates the myriad facets of our true nature in away that makes it almost foolproof and avoids many of the pitfalls that may delay the recognition of our essential nature. As a practioner of some 20+ years in the Nyingma lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism, I have been blessed with sublime teachings in the Dzogchen / Mahamudra cycle. Mr. Kelly's manual of pointing out instructions perfectly mirrors those teachings and brings a freshness of spirit that is as liberating as it is concise. May this book ease the suffering of all who come in contact with this healing jewel.

Profound, Accessible, Transformative Review by Drew K.
Rating

I feel so moved and truly grateful for this work! It is brilliantly alive. I am a long-time meditator as well as professional counselor, assistant professor, and wisdom researcher. Loch is able to translate and distill profound wisdom into accessible, step-by-step, “how-to” practices that allow us to see for ourselves. The Shift Into Freedom method offers the ability to “be, do and relate” from a loving awareness-based way of knowing without separation from my everyday life. The invitations and glimpses facilitate for me a sense of rest, validation, well-being and inclusion--a visceral feeling of a deeper intelligence coming online that I have begun to live from for varying periods of my day. This is the most important and accessible book available on the next steps in the evolution of consciousness--likely to become a classic for our times. An absolute must read.

This book is a wonderful balance of research, stories, and practical exercises. I recommend taking time with it and trying the very clearly described instructions to shift into awake awareness. I found the practical exercises worked very well for me to make this shift. The layout of the book clearly explains the why and how of shifting. I am so excited to use these glimpse practices in everyday life. It is not an escape or a conceptual knowing, but a direct experience that I have used in many situations in my life to shift from the busy never satisfied mind to the open accepting awareness and live life from there. Much gratitude for this wonderful practical guide.

This book and the audio struck me like lightning. However, it took me about three months of almost daily reading, listening, and meditating to be able to experience the "freedom" and make the content and the terminology in the book come alive for me or to glimpse the glimpses (after meditating regularly for two years). I see this book as a gold mine and am confident it will help me understand more and more in the years to come. I read dozens of EsoSpiriPsycho-books over the years and this is by far the best.

Dzogchen Demystified Review by Michael Shandler
Rating

This is a book for serious students of the dharma. If you are interested in practical ways to glimpse your own natural Being then this book provides many windows and doorways. The techniques are rooted in Dzogchen methodologies and although so-called direct approaches, such as the one proposed here are considered "advanced," the way they are presented makes them accessible and easy to learn. Loch has a grand vision to teach people a way of undermining the reactive everyday mind by learning to function in the world from a new operating system based in Being. This is a long book covering the psychological and spiritual aspects of awakening in some detail. It also includes some of the important scientific research on the effects of the meditative activities advocated. The separate CD set of the same name has Loch guiding the listener through the various glimpses introduced in the book and is highly recommended for those wishing to experience some "personal" training in these methods.

An innovative classic for our times, deeply inspiring, highly accessible! Review by Adeline van Waning MD PhD
Rating

This is a wonderful, insightful book, a treasure for both beginning and seasoned meditators. The core: shifting from thought-based and ego-identified effortful living into awake awareness living… Beautifully made possible, with simple immediate practice guidance (in the book, and also on separate CD) - what a relief! The four expressions of awake awareness (local, spacious, awake awareness embodied, and open-hearted awareness) that Loch Kelly describes, can be ‘glimpsed’ - small glimpses, many times, bringing a freer way of being and living from the heart. We can live Being. Both development and discovery aspects get addressed. In his approach, Loch applies elegant organizing principles and re-framing, that gently include Buddhist schools, Christianity, Advaita and other wisdom approaches. The book brings together traditions and modernity, age-old wisdom and recent neuroscience and psychology findings. It is written in accessible ‘awareness’-language, going beyond religious and spiritual terminologies - transcending and including.

Loch has done an amazing job describing the often indescribable experience of waking up from your everyday mind and glimpsing the space of your naturally clear state of being. His practices are easy to understand even if you're not a meditator. He uses terrific metaphors to help you understand what it may feel like to shift out of a thought-based way of living into the more open, peaceful, and ultimately liberating awareness-based level of being. Loch offers important neuroscience research findings and uses simple terminology to explain the ways in which you can change your brain. I highly recommend Shift into Freedom for anyone curious about tapping into their natural potential to be clear, open, and free.

An absolutely beautiful book for helping you find stillness and awareness in a moment's notice.

Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed Loch Kelly for our Inspire Nation Show.

I feel his technique is brilliant, the book is easy to understand, and for me, a meditator of over 20 years, I found this book incredibly useful. Most books are just reminders, this one has brilliant, new, simple techniques to help you side-step your mind and get you into a quiet, peaceful, and aware state, NOW. Not later, not 20-years-in-a-cave or more, but NOW.

This is an excellent book, highly recommended. Review by M. Scorelle
Rating

This is an excellent book, highly recommended. It is not only for those on the path to self-realization but of significant help to those in post-realization clarifying process. The exercises on the CD are amazing crossover synthesis of psychology and the non-dual path. A lot of the Non-Dual books are narratives and transcribed dialogues, which are fine...I enjoy them. This book goes one or two steps beyond, in presenting the art of enlightenment reasonably and delivering supports and guidance. Very few teachers are capable of directly transmitting awakening, and few aspirants are capable of receiving it. A more reasonable and gradual method is called for and that's what Loch has developed. One could say the movement of Non-Dual teachers and teachings, which started 20 years or so ago with Gangaji and Eckhart Tolle (and many others), has matured and deepened.

For the beginner on the spiritual path as well as for those who have meditated for years, this CD (along with the book with the same name) is a boon. I have listened to the set of CDs that offer short meditations, called glimpses, and have experienced a welcomed shift in perspective. Through exercises, insights and descriptions of consciousness, the listener can deeply explore and ultimately identify with awareness as his or her very essence of being. Personally, I would also recommend buying the book that accompanies these CD's. It offers clarification in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, as well as spiritual dimensions and as such, further enriches growth toward awakening. Shift into Freedom (both the CD and the book) opens a doorway into the depths of life's mysteries that for those who yearn for this insight is not to be missed.

Finally someone who gives an understandable explanation to this business about awareness! Review by Susan Schenck
Rating

I have entire bookshelves filled with spiritual books, so I was surprised that this one was so full of info I had not heard or read before. Or maybe it's that the author explained it in such a way that for the first time I feel I really understand some of these nuances about awake awareness! The book is filled with exercises to do, and he explains that some of these are ancient tools to have a steady stream of bliss experience. Unlike with food, drugs, sports, etc. (things in the outer world), there is no dopamine-reduction that comes with adaptation. Usually I read a book cover to cover, but I have found this book also useful for randomly opening a page and then reading and reflecting on a page or two. It seems the author is right when he claims in the subtitle that the books provides a scientific explanation to this business of awareness.

Clear, Practical Pointing to Truth Review by Lynn Marie Lumiere

Loch Kelly has succeeded in making the highest wisdom teachings accessible to all through clear, direct, and practical pointing. Shift into Freedom, along with the the audio CD, offers simple and effective exercises to directly experience our deepest nature--awake awareness. Understanding and directly experiencing our true nature is the most important focus we can have in today's world. And Loch takes you one glimpse at a time into that understanding. This book is highly beneficial to both experienced spiritual practitioners as well as those who are new to these teachings. I have found Shift into Freedom to be highly valuable for myself as well as for my psychotherapy clients. We all need to know how to shift out of everyday mind into the freedom that is our natural condition, and this book makes that possible.

A Spiritual Masterwork Review by her review
Rating

I am deeply grateful for this book, the companion CD, and for the work Loch Kelly is doing in this world. This is not a book to be simply read, but to be felt into, guided by. The companion CD is an excellent, perhaps essential support for this. I cannot emphasize enough the gifts this book has to offer to those willing to engage in its practices. Primarily, Loch offers a direct, surprisingly accessible path to shifting from our personal conditioning and habituated, thinking mind directly into the felt experience of spacious, open-hearted awake awareness, with its felt qualities of intelligence, love, inclusiveness/oneness, compassion, tenderness of heart, joy, wisdom, and more. It's so close we can't even see it. Loch teaches that only awareness itself can be aware -- our personality, our problem-solving nature can't do it, though they might try to imitate it. He teaches us, elegantly and effectively, how to shift into the freedom of awake awareness. Read this book, listen to the CD, catch Loch on YouTube and, if you can, experience him directly in a workshop, as I was fortunate enough to be able to do. You may feel, as I do, that doors are freely available, open to levels of awareness that, before, I could only glimpse. It takes practicing. Loch makes it simple & direct.

Loch Kelly combines his considerable skills as spiritual teacher and therapist to offer a path out of ego-centeredness with many simple (but not simplistic!) exercises and clear explanations of where he's going and why. The many "Glimpses" he offers -- short exercises -- are tremendous, although I recommend you invest in the audio "Shift into Freedom: A Training in the Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness." That way, you can continue to practice and better discern which Glimpses work best for you. If you've been on a "mindfulness merry-go-round," being here now once in a while, and out there somewhere most of the time, then this is the book for you!

High Impact Exercises Not To Be Missed Review by Eric Bause
Rating

Loch Kelly has put together something quite unique and remarkable here. The book contains 31 (give or take) exercises, or “glimpses,” as he calls them, and it is these glimpses that open the way via small glimpses many times. These exercises come in a variety of formats. Some are awareness exercises, feeling into or from awareness. Others are more of a pointing out of awareness. Some are structured more akin to traditional meditation practices, but are rarely taught in the west; an example of this the King of Samadhi practice (of Samadhiraja Sutra fame). Doing a number of glimpses in a row is a potent and effective protocol. With a little bit of practice you can do them just about anywhere.

The book isn’t just these glimpse exercises though... Loch situates the practices within the context of contemporary psychology, neuroscience, and contemplative traditions. The book is, in effect, the operating instructions, user guide, and text book for the glimpses. Many of these glimpses are based on mahamudra techniques that are usually only taught as advanced practices, but are nonetheless highly effective for laypersons who have not undergone various preliminary practices. Loch is authorized by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche to teach sutra mahamudra. He is also authorized to teach by Adyashanti.

Over the past couple of years, I have had the good fortune to have practiced in person with Loch, in settings from a couple of hours to a five day retreat, and can personally attest to the efficacy of these techniques. Seekers: do check this out; you’ll be glad you did.

There is also a separate companion audio CD that contains the glimpses that lend themselves nicely to sorting into smart phone playlists (these work well on public transportation too).

One-Stop Shopping for Students of Awakening Review by Brian O'Connor
Rating

Wow, this book has it all. It’s a complete guide that tells you everything you need to know in order to find peace and happiness through waking up to non-dual awareness. Loch Kelly combines spirituality, psychology, personal history, and historic background with practical techniques that anyone can use. He also includes comparisons across many of the non-dual traditions throughout history. All this in a clear, intelligent, and inviting writing style. Best of all are the exercises or meditations, which he calls “glimpses,” and which I found to be extremely powerful ways of pointing the mind to the true source of happiness that is pure awareness. Highly recommended!

An Invaluable Guide Review by Michael C Drury
Rating

After hearing Loch Kelly's interview with Tami Simon (of Sounds True) I downloaded the audio program of the same name (highly recommended), then bought the book for more depth and reference. In both, he presents his "direct approach" to "open-hearted awareness" in simple, easy-to-understand language, distilling the essence of Sutra Mahamudra wisdom for westerners, integrated with modern neuropsychology. With simple "glimpse practices," he shows the reader/listener how to "unhook" from the chattering, ego-identified mind and drop into "awake awareness," which is always already here, and inherent in everyone. And with "small glimpses, many times" one can "train to remain" in awake awareness, with the aim of living and being from that perspective. This approach is helpful for those who, like me, are drawn to nondualism (especially as espoused by Adyashanti and Eckhart Tolle) but find it challenging to put intellectual understanding into actual practice, and seek to experience being/consciousness directly without having to spend years in a monastery.

Peace Review by Thomas Hessmer

Loch's techniques guided me through "non-meditation meditation." Simple and easy with varied methods of getting out of one's mind and into spacious peace. Highly recommended for lazy mediators like me. If one method does not work for you at one time, there are many others he guides you through that may and did for me. Again highly recommended for inexperienced and experience meditators alike.

Most Effective Meditations Ever Review by Toby Kinkerton
Rating

I've been practicing meditation since 1972 and I find Loch Kelly's approach to awakening among the most effective I've ever experienced. I value results above all, and this and the accompanying audio exercises are remarkably effective for me. I read the book once through and use the audio exercises (same publisher, same title, Shift into Freedom) on a daily basis. The audio exercises are self-contained from a practical standpoint, but the book goes into more explanatory depth and includes written versions of the audio exercises.
While it's very clearly written, I confess that I didn't get it all on the first pass and plan to return to it, probably multiple times, as experience deepens and I can comprehend more. Suffice it to say that, to me, at least, it is perhaps the clearest and most detailed treatment of awakening from a western psychological standpoint, to date. While Loch draws on his experience with Tibetan Buddhism and many other eastern and western spiritual traditions, his approach is firmly rooted in his practice as a psychologist. The language is easy on western ears and doesn't rely on unfamiliar cultural and religious trappings. A sort of stripped down, no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase, high-test approach.
There's something very interesting going on here, for me, at least. In spite of not being able to intentionally follow each instruction, the words seem to do their job anyway. I've found this with many of the best spiritual writing/listening, but this perhaps most powerfully. Just when I think I didn't get the idea at all, something slips in on a deeper level that indicates that I did get it after all, at least where it counts. Same thing happened to me when I attended one of Loch's workshops.
In short, this seems to me to be an unpretentious but direct and powerful door to awakening. It communicates on multiple levels and produces results. Love this!

This book is a Treasure Review by M.Senti, MD, Phd

Instantaneous change in consciousness, which is the true nature, to stay there.
This is undoubtedly one of the most important moments in the life of any person. It is a return to the true nature of being at home, which has always remained closely with us as we are. The error that leads to suffering and misunderstanding has historically been seeing the world from the perspective of all the thoughts and emotions that make up the ego, which lacks true identity. It’s part of the true consciousness, but consciousness does not depend on him and the ego can in no way replace consciousness.
There must be a radical change of perspective, to consciousness, the real home, not darkened or clouded by thoughts or emotions, which are included in consciousness, because consciousness is all-inclusive. When the world is viewed from the consciousness, when one has rediscovered the true self, the perspective changes radically, the mind quiets and takes its place, which corresponds to the secondary role and not the principal as before. Emotions stabilize naturally, decisions are even-handed, there is peace, which is inherent to the natural state and the connection comes with everything as consciousness, which is the true nature, is the same for all beings.
This is a simple finding that, properly understood, can and should revolutionize the spiritual, physical world and all mankind. And it is important to consider that once consciousness of consciousness is taken, the true home is remembered as a rediscovery and can never be forgotten.
From here everything is pure, without useless rhetoric.
This book is finally a treasure.

Immensely grateful Review by Megan V.
Rating

After three decades of intense bhakti and advaita practices, I was feeling frustrated. Much grace and some glimpses along, I still seemed to be spending far too much time web surfing and too little time in deeper regions of consciousness. With this book, it is as though all the beautiful beads of my seeking have been gathered up from a tabletop and strung together into a coherent whole. The practices sound almost absurdly simple, but they lead me into beautiful depths that keep deepening and expanding, even in the midst of the hurly burly of life. I am beyond grateful to Loch Kelly's clarity and integrity in producing this work.

Eternally grateful Review by Zach

If you have a sincere interest in leaving the spiritual or psychological marketplace - the incessant search for the new best method for finding peace of mind and heart - I recommend you read this book. If read closely, and practiced with the accompanying audio materials, Loch can help introduce you to a dimension of your consciousness that is effortlessly awake, clear, and peaceful. This book completely re-oriented my approach to meditation, and my understanding of what it means to "wake up." Through a series of brilliant and innovative pointers, Loch is able to experientially reveal to us that we are all wide awake, right now. However, he does not stop there. This book also contains a treasure trove of wisdom about the path of integrating this awakened loving wisdom into our lives: about how to mix Ultimate awakeness with the relative world of our human activity. He shows that we all must discover these inner resources for ourselves if we aspire to live with intimacy, joy, humor, courage, and fearlessness.

If you spend enough time practicing and contemplating the materials in this book, you will be left feeling both humbled, and eternally grateful.

Game Changer Review by Colleen Loehr, M.D.
Rating

This book is a game changer for me. Incisive descriptions and exercises dislodge awareness from entrenched mental patterns. "Ego-identification is not 'you' identifying with 'your ego'; it is a pattern of consciousness made up of thinking and ego functions (such as seeking and protection) that form during our early biological development....Ego-identification is a mental pattern of consciousness that creates the feeling of a 'mini-me' inside our heads. It doesn't have to be fought, repressed, extinguished, denied, or killed. We don't become a nobody, an angel, or a couch potato. Instead, when we discover awake awareness as our true nature, our ego functions can return to their natural roles and semi-retire from their second job as identity." Kelly goes on to say, "Moving pieces on the chessboard of our minds will not clear up our confusion or end our suffering. For that, we need to shift out of ego-identification and into awake awareness....Awake awareness might seem like a new experience; however, it's not an altered state, a transcendent state, or even a meditative state. It's our innate, true nature that is always here. When we have shifted into awake awareness, we realize that ego-identification is actually the altered state. By recognizing awake awareness, we are dehypnotizing ourselves from the trance of ego-identification." Kelly gives powerful pointing instructions for recognizing awake awareness. Since practicing the glimpse exercises I have noticed a qualitative difference in my interactions with people at home and at the psychiatric hospital where I work. I hope to share some of the exercises with interested clients and staff. Kelly writes, "The ocean of awareness knows all waves from inside the wave." There is a sense of greater intimacy with experience and at the same time greater spaciousness surrounding experience. I have never met Kelly and I feel fortunate to have discovered this book. Very highly recommended.
