I'd been searching for something meaningful and lasting in my life for many years; I love Eckhart's Power of Now and everytime I get down in the dumps, I get on my bike and climb up into the hills with it in my ear. When I come back I'm 99% better, but his advice of, ..."always say yes to the present moment..." doesn't have the resonance to really stick, even though I wish it would.

"Shift" has given me the hope that I will be able to stay present and switch out of the uncomfortable anxiety that I've suffered with since puberty; a reeling mind anytime I have to perform under pressure with someone watching me has been the norm for nearly 40 years now.

I know there is a honeymoon period to many things in life, but I feel that this beautiful book has given me so much ammunition to battle my habitual way of negative thinking, which is so deeply engrained. Loch, thank you! I feel like a new chapter of confidence and clarity filled with awake awareness in my life has begun.

Loch Kelly has provided humanity with a profound, yet practical means for each individual to come to a deep recognition of their essential nature while still incorporating psychological development. Loch is clear and concise and yet provides a wide breadth of information that looks at science and wisdom and the ways in which they relate. There are a wide range of practices in the book that offers each individual the opportunity to see what resonates for them and works for them. What I appreciate most about the book is that Loch goes into the nuances that can occur as we shift into the various levels of mind and ultimately into awake awareness. This allows for the book to serve as a guide that can be picked up numerous times from the book shelf to allow for a deeper resonance to occur each time it is revisited.

Simply put, this book is simple in its elegance and practical and inviting. Loch's experience working as both a psychotherapist and spiritual teacher are evident and this book will surely support those interested for years to come.

This approach really worked for me. I have M.S. with fatigue and pain, in addition to the medication side-effects of depression and anxiety. This book is a game changer for me. Incisive descriptions and exercises dislodge awareness from entrenched mental patterns. "Ego-identification is not 'you' identifying with 'your ego'; it is a pattern of consciousness made up of thinking and ego functions (such as seeking and protection) that form during our early biological development....Ego-identification is a mental pattern of consciousness that creates the feeling of a 'mini-me' inside our heads. It doesn't have to be fought, repressed, extinguished, denied, or killed. We don't become a nobody, an angel, or a couch potato. Instead, when we discover awake awareness as our true nature, our ego functions can return to their natural roles and semi-retire from their second job as identity." Kelly goes on to say, "Moving pieces on the chessboard of our minds will not clear up our confusion or end our suffering. For that, we need to shift out of ego-identification and into awake awareness....Awake awareness might seem like a new experience; however, it's not an altered state, a transcendent state, or even a meditative state. It's our innate, true nature that is always here. When we have shifted into awake awareness, we realize that ego-identification is actually the altered state. By recognizing awake awareness, we are dehypnotizing ourselves from the trance of ego-identification." Kelly gives powerful pointing instructions for recognizing awake awareness. Since practicing the glimpse exercises I have noticed a qualitative difference in my interactions with people at home and at the psychiatric hospital where I work. I hope to share some of the exercises with interested clients and staff. Kelly writes, "The ocean of awareness knows all waves from inside the wave." There is a sense of greater intimacy with experience and at the same time greater spaciousness surrounding experience. I have never met Kelly and I feel fortunate to have discovered this book. Very highly recommended.

After three decades of intense bhakti and advaita practices, I was feeling frustrated. Much grace and some glimpses along, I still seemed to be spending far too much time web surfing and too little time in deeper regions of consciousness. With this book, it is as though all the beautiful beads of my seeking have been gathered up from a tabletop and strung together into a coherent whole. The practices sound almost absurdly simple, but they lead me into beautiful depths that keep deepening and expanding, even in the midst of the hurly burly of life. I am beyond grateful to Loch Kelly's clarity and integrity in producing this work.

Loch not only makes some powerful distinctions useful for all Truth Students... He also introduces many guided inquires that open new possibilities for Direct Knowing... which provides a Joyous and Powerful context for all aspects of the Journey.

I particularly liked is WAKING UP/IN/OUT Model... and his thoughts toward the end of the book on the implications of Awake Awareness for psychology, growth, and healing.

I HIGHLY recommend this important book!

This book is a wonderful resource for awakening. Loch talks about five levels of consciousness and shows us how to move between them, using thought as a tool rather than as an identity. His instructions go beyond the level of consciousness associated with secular mindfulness and take us all the way to unity. The section on contemporary scientific understanding of consciousness satisfies the curious mind, and the practices are clear and specific enough to bring about real transformation.

This book is a game-changer. Not only does Loch Kelly describe our natural state as "awake awareness" he describes how to access this state easily and directly. No requirements for hours of daily meditation for years in order to achieve a transcendent state only a few can reach. Rather, Loch gives many simple exercises that offer "small glimpses" directly into our natural state. These "small glimpses" can be done anytime anywhere; so the simple practice of "small glimpses" many times allows me to experience myself as who I really am, not the "mini-me" in my head. And these practices are not only for myself to experience my own awake awareness; it is meant to flow through my heart to others as "open-hearted awareness." I recommend this book highly. I also recommend experiencing a retreat with Loch in person; he is the "real deal", he models what he teaches.

I have been waiting for this treasure of a book for a while now. Besides the clear, helpful, almost graphic expositions, in it one finds a wide variety of well-designed pointers which aid us in making the shift into recognizing the awareness, peace and joy that we fundamentally are. The author tells us this shift can be learned, a rare approach.

Loch Kelly is an effective, sophisticated yet practical teacher, with a solid intellectual and experiential ground. This book reflects just that.

A truly inspirational guide to a truer way of living daily life. This book is a real gem and has helped me find peace in myself and the world around me. The practical techniques and exercises, which Kelly astutely calls "glimpses," allowed me to slowly work toward a state of open-hearted awareness. There is an "aha" moment early in the book where I recognized the difference between my ego-identification and true self. There is a huge sense of relief that follows this and soon after I began to understand awake awareness and the importance of it. With practice, I am able to live increasing amounts of daily life from this true self in a state akin to "Flow" or coming home. This is life changing!

Wow, this book has it all. It’s a complete guide that tells you everything you need to know in order to find peace and happiness through waking up to non-dual awareness. Loch Kelly combines spirituality, psychology, personal history, and historic background with practical techniques that anyone can use. He also includes comparisons across many of the non-dual traditions throughout history. All this in a clear, intelligent, and inviting writing style. Best of all are the exercises or meditations, which he calls “glimpses,” and which I found to be extremely powerful ways of pointing the mind to the true source of happiness that is pure awareness. Highly recommended!

This book is a wonderful balance of research, stories, and practical exercises. I recommend taking time with it and trying the very clearly described instructions to shift into awake awareness. I found the practical exercises worked very well for me to make this shift. The layout of the book clearly explains the why and how of shifting. I am so excited to use these glimpse practices in everyday life. It is not an escape or a conceptual knowing, but a direct experience that I have used in many situations in my life to shift from the busy never satisfied mind to the open accepting awareness and live life from there. Much gratitude for this wonderful practical guide.
