It is possible to access the same sense of well-being, clarity, inner freedom, and loving connection realized by the world’s meditation masters. We can do this by shifting our awareness in the midst of our daily lives. Shift into Freedom presents innovative teacher Loch Kelly’s training manual for actively participating in the evolution of your own consciousness.
Synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world’s contemplative traditions, Shift into Freedom offers an accessible and remarkably powerful series of meditations that lead us to a little-known natural capacity called “awake awareness.” Through an unfolding process of “small glimpses, many times,” these exercises shift us from a thought-based knowing to an awareness-based way of operating in the world. With continued practice, we learn to “unhook” from our customary home in our ego-based identity—and then sustain an embodied presence and relatedness known as “open-hearted awareness.” Loch Kelly teaches that this is “the meeting place of awakening and growing up, where we have the capacity to handle a fully emotional, intimate life and act with authenticity and compassion.”
Learn more about:
- How to separate awareness from thinking to realize that thoughts and emotions are not the center of who we are
- How insights from neuroscience can help us learn how to embody awakening

- The paradox of “being home while returning home”
- Finding the off-switch for the chattering mind
- How to intentionally and immediately shift into peace of mind any time of your day
- Awakening as a natural process of human development, which unfolds as waking up, waking in, and waking out
- Meditation practices for all phases of the journey of awakening and embodiment
- Four stages of spiritual growth: recognition, realization, stabilization, and expression
- Untying the “knots” in our mindbody system to liberate us from our deepest doubts and fears
- How to move from deliberate mindfulness to effortless mindfulness and heart mindfulness
- How to effortlessly focus without using attention
- Discovering your innate happiness that is not dependent on circumstances
- How to welcome and liberate sub-personalities after initial awakening
- A user’s manual for your consciousness to help you free yourself from the limits of ego-identification and live from open-hearted awareness

Not only does Loch describe our natural state as "awake awareness" he describes how to access this state easily and directly Review by linsky
This book is a game-changer. Not only does Loch Kelly describe our natural state as "awake awareness" he describes how to access this state easily and directly. No requirements for hours of daily meditation for years in order to achieve a transcendent state only a few can reach. Rather, Loch gives many simple exercises that offer "small glimpses" directly into our natural state. These "small glimpses" can be done anytime anywhere; so the simple practice of "small glimpses" many times allows me to experience myself as who I really am, not the "mini-me" in my head. And these practices are not only for myself to experience my own awake awareness; it is meant to flow through my heart to others as "open-hearted awareness." I recommend this book highly. I also recommend experiencing a retreat with Loch in person; he is the "real deal", he models what he teaches. (Posted on September 28, 2016)
The most important book of our times. Review by Pam Paulson
I believe this is the most important book that I have ever read. Mr. Kelly has distilled and simplified the process of "enlightenment" into a set of exercises that will really allow you to directly experience the shift from ego based consciousness to a state of pure awareness. I have spent my whole life seeking a change in consciousness and to be honest I did not have the discipline to "follow" a spiritual tradition. I am so relieved to know that this does not have to be the case. I always suspected it could be simpler.
On the first day of starting to read the book and do the exercises, I experienced a strong shift. I have suffered from severe depression throughout my life so the shift was a definite and welcome contrast. I suggest you go to Youtube to utilize Loch's videos for the written exercises. He is not teaching theory here, this is experiential.
These techniques could change the world and could be taught to almost anyone. I want to say, thank you, Loch Kelly, your efforts have made a huge difference in my life. (Posted on September 28, 2016)

Tremendous book - highly recommended! Review by Jim Corcoran
In this wonderful book, Loch Kelly does a masterful job of presenting ancient teachings in an accessible modern western vernacular, intertwining them with current psychology and the latest scientific learnings, along with proving practical guided practices to enable the reader to find out in their own experience what freedom and awakening is - which is the most important thing. I also just attended a workshop with Loch at NYI and he is a very gifted teacher. Highly recommended! Namaste! (Posted on September 22, 2016)
This is life changing! Review by Morid
A truly inspirational guide to a truer way of living daily life. This book is a real gem and has helped me find peace in myself and the world around me. The practical techniques and exercises, which Kelly astutely calls "glimpses," allowed me to slowly work toward a state of open-hearted awareness. There is an "aha" moment early in the book where I recognized the difference between my ego-identification and true self. There is a huge sense of relief that follows this and soon after I began to understand awake awareness and the importance of it. With practice, I am able to live increasing amounts of daily life from this true self in a state akin to "Flow" or coming home. This is life changing! (Posted on September 22, 2016)
Sad! Review by Holub
It always makes me sad when a meditation teacher tells his students that everybody can skip the first 10 or so stages of meditative development and go straight to the highest stages... What a terrible misconception of your "quick-fix times!" (Posted on September 22, 2016)
A guidebook to Being Review by Ann Mcneal
Two things I love most about Loch's approach to awake awareness: 1) It's about being in the real world while also aware of the spaciousness of open awareness. 2) It's about direct access to awareness, not spending 20 years in a cave, but learning how to open to that sense of OK-ness that most of us have already experienced at one time or another.
In this book, Loch first gives an overview of his approach in Chapter 1, and then goes in depth into different aspects. His writing is clear and engaging, with sly puns and other evidence of his sense of humor. At the end of each chapter is a set of "Glimpse Practices" that can give us clear pointers to awareness. My favorite example is the question, "What is here now, when there is no problem to be solved?" This question takes me directly to a sense of spaciousness and ease.
Some quotes from the book:
"Intellectually understanding awakening is like having a strand of Christmas lights; directly experiencing awakening is like plugging them in."
"In this approach, awakening begins with a direct recognition but then has a gradual unfolding. It is not instant enlightenment or an escape from the human condition."

Wonderful Guide to Awakening Review by Ann
This book is a wonderful resource for awakening. Loch talks about five levels of consciousness and shows us how to move between them, using thought as a tool rather than as an identity. His instructions go beyond the level of consciousness associated with secular mindfulness and take us all the way to unity. The section on contemporary scientific understanding of consciousness satisfies the curious mind, and the practices are clear and specific enough to bring about real transformation.
