E161: Transmutation—The Spiritual Art of Letting Ene...

The mind becomes disturbed due to unfinished emotional energies from past experiences, which lead to fixation, worry, and suffering. There are three possible ways to deal with these energies: suppression, expression, and transmutation. The path of transmutation involves consciously relaxing whenever the energies come up, allowing them to pass through instead of resisting them. When allowed to pass freely, the vibration of the energies can rise and fear can become peace, anger can become compassion, and judging others can become love.

Darnell Lamont Walker: Listen to a Death Doula: This I...

“This is sometimes what love looks like. People want to love you—let people love you.”

It’s a phrase death doula Darnell Lamont Walker has spoken countless times at bedsides, to those who feel ashamed of being seen in their vulnerability, those who don’t want to be a burden, those who have spent a lifetime giving but struggle to receive. What he’s discovered is that the end of life has a way of revealing what love actually is—and it often looks nothing like we expected.

An Emmy-nominated children’s television writer, documentary filmmaker, and death doula, Darnell has accompanied people through life’s final transition since he was a teenager. In this deeply moving conversation, he shares the profound lessons about love and connection he’s gathered from decades of this sacred work.

Join Tami and Darnell as they explore:

  • Why letting ourselves be loved—especially when we feel most vulnerable—is one of life’s hardest and most important lessons
  • “Grief is the sequel to love”—reframing loss as a testament to how deeply we’ve connected
  • The stories people most need to tell before they die, and how sharing them becomes an act of love
  • How spirits and ancestors return for the dying—and what this reveals about love’s continuity
  • The surprising joy that emerges from death work
  • What it means to “die empty” and leave nothing unloved or unexpressed

Whether you’ve supported someone through dying or are simply longing to love and be loved more fully, Darnell offers wisdom that will stay with you long after the conversation ends.

This conversation offers genuine transmission—not just concepts about awakening, but the palpable presence of realized teachers exploring the growing edge of spiritual understanding together. Originally aired on Sounds True One.

E160: The Path to Integration—Releasing the Fragment...

Your psyche becomes fragmented because of suppressed emotions and unintegrated past experiences. These suppressed energies block the natural upward flow of Shakti, which leads to psychological suffering and confusion. Trying to fix internal issues by changing the outside world only results in temporary relief and greater entanglement. True spiritual growth comes from releasing the suppressed parts of yourself, practicing non-resistance, and refusing to store more disturbances. By doing this, you become whole, integrated, and attuned to the divine energy within, realizing you were always a great being all along.

Let Us Make Sanctuary

Bayo Akomolafe, PhD, was born in Nigeria and steeped in Yoruba teachings as well as Western academia. Trained in clinical psychology, he refers to himself as a “renegade academic” and is globally recognized for his poetic, unconventional, and soul-stirring views on our current global crisis and the opportunities we now have for social change.

In this podcast, Sounds True founder Tami Simon speaks with Dr. Akomolafe about how sanctuary is where slowing down and healing happens. They discuss: how the function of slowing down in urgent times is not about simply resting so that we can continue forward in the same direction, but about how to engage in deep inquiry about where we are going; pouring drink to earth—an African spiritual technology that expresses our indebtedness to our ancestors and all that makes life possible; standing at the crossroads—how the ground underneath us is going through a seismic shift that is allowing the unsaid to now be spoken and intelligible; the invitation of the slave ship as a place of spiritual contemplation and as a site of renewing our connections with grief, loss, trauma, and tragedy; grieving as a form of activism; and more.

E94: Spiritual Freedom Is Simpler than You Think

Life is fundamentally simple—we’re sitting on a tiny planet spinning through infinite space for a few years, and that’s it. We make it complicated by deciding how everything must be for us to be okay. This creates suffering, anxiety, and endless worries. Spirituality is about opening up, honoring, and appreciating life as it is. As we let go of ourselves, life becomes joyful, creative, and rich, not because it changed, but because we did.

E93: The Practice of Unconditional Openness

When you’re open, life feels beautiful and joyful; when you’re closed, everything seems wrong. This leaves you with two choices: find things that open you or find out how not to close. The first leads to a life of struggling with people, places, and things to match your preferences, while the second leads to the spiritual state of unconditional well-being. Make your choice.

E92: Releasing the Meaningless Moments That Create the...

The central spiritual teaching is that we are not the mind but the awareness behind it. The personal mind, composed of impressions from past experiences, creates a false sense of self (ego) that causes suffering and distraction. Spiritual growth begins by recognizing this addiction to the personal mind and learning to lean away from its pull rather than engaging with or resisting its thoughts. This process allows divine energy (Shakti) to emerge and guide us deeper into the source of consciousness.

E91: Allowing Life to Remove Your Blockages

The foundational flaw in human behavior is the belief that “I’m not okay.” What follows is the lifelong attempt to fix this through external achievements, relationships, and coping mechanisms. Spiritual growth begins by shifting from trying to fix one’s discomfort to inquiring why the discomfort exists in the first place. Life itself becomes the guru, revealing daily why we close our hearts. The only true practice is to let go of resistance in every moment, allowing life to sculpt us into our highest nature, which is already pure joy and love.

E90: How to Stop Minding and Start Living

“Do you mind?” We “mind” everything, from traffic to childhood memories, and this habitual minding creates endless mental ripples that disturb our peace. Spiritual growth is not found through adding practices but through subtracting resistance, through relaxing and letting go of what disturbs us. Every moment becomes an opportunity to free ourselves by choosing not to mind, and over time this unlocks profound freedom and transformation.

E89: Freedom from Preference: The Evolution of Caring

The ego often says “I don’t care” as a defense mechanism to avoid pain or disappointment. Truly not caring isn’t about becoming indifferent, but about genuinely letting go of the need for things to be a certain way. When we stop resisting life and release our inner preferences, we experience a peaceful state where nothing has to change for us to be OK.

E38: Beyond Philosophy: Experiencing the Truth of Cons...

True understanding of consciousness comes not through philosophical thinking or external experimentation but from the direct experience of Self. When awareness is no longer distracted by thoughts, emotions, and sensory inputs, you can remain in the seat of objective observation and directly experience the true nature of consciousness. Ancient yogis achieved this state through practices that quieted the mind and withdrew attention from external distractions. This led to a profound merger with the universal source of consciousness. True spiritual evolution involves turning inward to explore consciousness directly.

E67: Life as Your Teacher: Embracing Growth in Every M...

Spiritual growth is not separate from daily life but an integral part of it. It is about recognizing the sacredness of every moment and maintaining a divine state regardless of life’s circumstances. Life’s challenges and discomforts serve as opportunities to grow and evolve. The ultimate goal is to free yourself from attachments, expectations, and self-imposed limitations and return to the natural state of Self-Realization. By letting go of mental and emotional constraints, you can effortlessly ascend to a higher state of being.

E40: The Art of Living in the Now

Living in the present moment frees you from the burden of past experiences and anxieties about the future. Emotional and psychological blockages, formed by resistance to the past, will inevitably distort your mind’s view of reality and limit happiness. By practicing mindfulness, acceptance, and inner purification, you can learn to live in the present moment and embrace life’s challenges with enthusiasm and openness rather than fear and resistance.

E49: Breaking Barriers: Finding Joy Within

There are two very different approaches to achieving a beautiful, love-filled life. The first is externally focused—seeking joy, love, and peace through outside circumstances, people, or actions. The second is inward, asking why these very natural states are blocked internally and taking responsibility for removing those blockages. Love and joy are inherent to everyone but are obscured by stored emotional pain, fears, and responses conditioned by past experiences. By letting go of these internal blockages and facing life’s challenges with openness rather than resistance, you can cultivate love and inner freedom as your unconditional state of being.

E127: Unconditional Well-Being — The Practice of Non...

Our lives are governed by the programming from our past experiences that create preferences, defenses, and closures which block the natural upward flow of shakti. Spiritual work is learning to not close—releasing stored disturbances, relaxing in the face of triggers, and practicing openness in ordinary situations until we experience unconditional well-being. Sustained openness liberates your inner energy, leading to overwhelming love, joy, and, ultimately, spiritual union.

E186: You Don’t Need to Rise—You Need to Release

Spiritual growth is not about rising higher but about releasing the inner attachments and conditioning that hold you down. Your suffering comes from resisting reality and clinging to preferences formed by past experiences. By accepting life as it unfolds and letting go of inner resistance, you access natural peace, clarity, and eventually transcend the ego entirely.

E187: Love Is Not Found—It Is Unblocked

Love is an inner energy that flows naturally when the heart is open, but people block it by holding onto past pain and resisting reality. The external world does not cause the absence of love—our internal reactions and stored past experiences do. By letting go, relaxing through discomfort, and accepting reality as it is, one can live in a continuous state of openness and unconditional love.

E188: The Illusion of Self—Breaking Free from Ego

Ego is the false self, created from past experiences, that constantly judges, fears, and tries to control life to feel okay. Suffering comes from identifying with these inner patterns instead of recognizing oneself as the awareness observing them. Spiritual liberation is achieved by noticing, not resisting, and letting all inner disturbances pass through, revealing one’s true nature as peaceful, conscious presence.

E189: The Spiritual Art of Handling Life

Spiritual growth is not about escaping life or reaching for God outside oneself, but about letting go of the ego self that constantly tries to resist and manipulate reality. Human suffering comes from the inability to handle inner discomfort, which leads people to try to control the outside world, suppress emotions, and fight to defend their self-concept. As one practices acceptance, surrender, and non-resistance, consciousness naturally rises beyond the personal self into peace, clarity, and union with higher awareness.

E19: Learning to Serve the Present Moment

True spiritual growth comes from ceasing to constantly focus on yourself—I, me, and mine. Instead of getting caught up in personal likes and dislikes, you can learn to serve the moment in front of you with your full heart and soul, without expecting anything in return. To do this, you must gradually become comfortable with both positive and negative experiences by letting go of inner resistance. Understand that spiritual practice is not about seeking rewards, but about deep surrender to the present moment and serving that moment as your gift to God.

E190: The Seat of Consciousness—Freedom Beyond the E...

You are not your thoughts, emotions, preferences, or psychological patterns—you are the consciousness that is aware of them. Suffering comes from holding onto experiences, building an ego out of what you could not handle, and then trying to manipulate life so you never feel discomfort again. Spiritual liberation comes through remaining established in the seat of consciousness, letting experiences pass through without resistance, and eventually dissolving the separate self back into universal consciousness.
