David Deida: The Way of Zero

What happens when purpose disappears—and you don’t fall apart?

This week, Tami Simon speaks with David Deida—wisdom teacher and bestselling author of The Way of the Superior Man—about his new book, The Man of Zero: A Guide to Primal Power, Boundless Sex, and the Freedom Beyond Ambition. In it, Deida maps a rarely discussed phase of masculine development: the moment when drive, ambition, and meaning dissolve—and something far more fundamental takes their place.

Join Tami and David to explore:

  • What the “man of zero” actually is—and why it’s nothing like depression, blankness, or spiritual bypassing
  • The three phases of masculine development: basic man, superior man, and the man of zero—and how to know which phase you’re in
  • Why the feminine has a genius for testing your zero—and what that reveals about presence, integrity, and love
  • The art of “river banking”—and how the masculine provides depth and direction without domination
  • How inherited patterns, ancestral contractions, and mammalian impulses move through and eventually purify in the light of awareness
  • What “boundless sex” really means—and how intimacy shifts when love is no longer bounded by attraction to form
  • From deficient emptiness to full emptiness: the alchemical passage from lack to presence

This interview also speaks directly to women—and to anyone navigating the fluidity of masculine and feminine energies—offering a framework for understanding the partners, phases, and inner forces that shape our most intimate lives.

E188: The Illusion of Self—Breaking Free from Ego

Ego is the false self, created from past experiences, that constantly judges, fears, and tries to control life to feel okay. Suffering comes from identifying with these inner patterns instead of recognizing oneself as the awareness observing them. Spiritual liberation is achieved by noticing, not resisting, and letting all inner disturbances pass through, revealing one’s true nature as peaceful, conscious presence.

E187: Love Is Not Found—It Is Unblocked

Love is an inner energy that flows naturally when the heart is open, but people block it by holding onto past pain and resisting reality. The external world does not cause the absence of love—our internal reactions and stored past experiences do. By letting go, relaxing through discomfort, and accepting reality as it is, one can live in a continuous state of openness and unconditional love.

E180: From Ego to Freedom—The Path to Liberation

The personal mind creates suffering by making everything be about “me,” which generates fears about the future and attachments to the past. These stored impressions form the ego, which distorts reality and causes continuous psychological disturbance. Liberation comes from letting go of these patterns and practicing acceptance—learning to handle whatever arises without resistance.

E182: Stop Closing Your Heart—The Real Path to Love ...

The key to opening the heart is learning not to close it. The heart is very sensitive, and it closes due to stored past impressions that create a sense of fear and the need for self-protection. Thus, people seek external conditions for the heart to feel safe enough to open. But as conditions change, the tendency to close is still there. The true path to living with an open heart is learning not to close, by handling life’s experiences without resistance. Through awareness and practice, one can release stored impressions and live in a naturally open, loving state.

E183: The Impersonal Nature of Reality

The personal mind creates suffering by taking everything personally and forming preferences about how life should be. In truth, life’s events are the outcomes of vast chains of cause and effect stretching through time and space. Suffering arises when we deny the reality of these causes and resist the events that are unfolding before us, as well as those that have unfolded in the past. Spiritual liberation comes from learning to align with reality as it is and then working to raise it as it passes before us.

E184: Acceptance—For Everything There Is a Season

Suffering is not caused by external events but by our resistance to reality and our inability to handle what has already happened. Acceptance means acknowledging reality and our internal reactions to it, not through suppression, but through allowing stored emotional energy to release. Through this process, one becomes peaceful, free from ego-driven preferences, and capable of living in harmony with life as it unfolds.

E185: The Truth About Acceptance—Why Resisting Reali...

Reality can be defined as that which has already happened; after all, no one can make it not have happened. Suffering comes from resisting reality rather than accepting it. But acceptance does not mean passively allowing harmful situations to continue; it means letting go of the inner resistance and stored emotional reactions to what has happened, and then acting from a place of clarity. By consistently accepting and processing experiences instead of suppressing them, one releases inner blockages and returns to a natural state of peace, love, and clarity.
