Stress and suffering arise not from external events but from our internal resistance to them—based on our inner preferences, fears, and desires toward what is happening. The outer world manifests from vast cosmic forces beyond our control, while our inner reactions are shaped by past impressions we have held onto. The path to liberation lies in relaxing and letting go of resistance, allowing life to flow through us without obstruction, thus opening to inner peace, joy, and spiritual freedom.

E135: The Yoga of Wisdom—The Path to Liberation

Jnana Yoga is the path of wisdom through which one contemplates the vastness of creation until the personal mind dissolves into the infinite. God is seen as conscious energy (Chit Shakti) manifesting the entire universe. Interestingly, scientists see the entire physical universe as emanating from an omnipresent quantum field. Despite this knowledge, we suffer. The cause of suffering is that our individual rays of consciousness are distracted by, and identify with, the objects they are aware of. This creates the ego, the false sense of “I”. with all its personal struggles. Through the practices of surrender, witness consciousness, and letting go, one’s consciousness can rise again into divine union and eternal bliss.

Tami’s Takeaway
In any moment of self-criticism or self-blame, a “go-to move” that is immediately effective and state-changing is to gently touch your arm, stroke your face, or place your hand on your heart (any form of soothing touch). This activates our mammalian “tend and befriend” system, releases oxytocin, and shifts us out of the threat-defense system. Try it next time you feel self-critical. Gently touching your body can shift your state of mind—fast!

Mary O’Malley: What’s in the Way Is the Way

Mary O’Malley is an author, counselor, and acknowledged leader in the field of spiritual awakening. With Sounds True, Mary has published What’s in the Way Is the Way: A Practical Guide for Waking Up to Life. One of the worst feelings for me is helplessness. Mary teaches that “life is destined to bring up what is bound up.” This podcast brought up for me how I push away feelings of helplessness. According to Mary, “what’s in the way is the way,” and we can become what she calls “tightness detectives” to see how we clamp down in certain situations and resist what we don’t want to feel. When instead we meet our feelings with curiosity and spaciousness, we discover the free flow of aliveness and the absolute trustworthiness in every experience.

Zainab Salbi: Wielding Our Sword of Truth

Zainab Salbi is an author, humanitarian, and media commentator who founded the nonprofit organization Women for Women International when she was only 23 years old. With Sounds True, she has published the book Freedom Is an Inside Job: Owning Our Darkness and Our Light to Heal Ourselves and the World. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Zainab discuss what it means to be an agent of social change while also navigating the everyday journey of being human. E124: Transcending the Ripples on the Lake of Mind

Mind is a very high vibration energy field that receives impressions from the outside world and renders them as inner experiences. In the state of pure mind, thoughts and emotions arise as impressions that pass right through. But when consciousness resists these impressions, they accumulate and form the personal mind, creating ego, preferences, and suffering. By contrast, the impersonal mind operates free of personal bias, enabling clear thinking, creativity, science, and inspiration. Spiritual growth involves letting go of the personal mind and living from a higher state of clarity, love, and surrender while still engaging in life.

E123: How Clinging Creates Ego and Suffering

Human beings walk around with a fishbowl over their head full of thoughts about themselves. Instead of naturally processing outside experiences as they come in, we trap the ones we can’t handle inside this bowl. These stored impressions distort our perception and generate endless preferences about what should or shouldn’t be happening. True spirituality is about letting each experience pass through fully processed—whether joyful or painful—without clinging. When no longer distracted by these stored impressions, one enters a state of openness, equanimity, and ecstatic unity with all of creation.

The spiritual journey is not about chasing external goals but about realizing that these pursuits only mask a deeper truth—we are not okay inside and driven by deep-seated fears and needs.
