After two serious spinal injuries, Vidyamala Burch found herself facing the loneliness of disability and chronic pain with few skills or resources to turn to. But instead of giving up, she set out on a mission to embrace her physical challenges with compassion, acceptance, and peace.
Living Well with Pain and Illness shares the fruits of her courageous life’s work, teaching us how the practice of mindfulness can help us thrive in the face of health challenges of any kind. Chronic pain has been called the modern world’s silent epidemic. Billions are spent every year in an attempt to cope, yet the best solution available may be absolutely free: mindful living. In Living Well with Pain and Illness, Vidyamala Burch presents a work that is at once an inspirational memoir and practical guidebook for using mindfulness to reframe your relationship with physical and emotional suffering.

A very inspiring, thorough and practical book, I recommend it to anybody wanting to get more "body consciousness".
As a UK/NHS doctor working in the Pain Management field for 15 years I felt on reading this book that someone had put into words and practical strategies the ideas I had been struggling to formulate. The results are gloriously evident in Vidyamala (with whom I am now training) and in the programs I have been running adopting these techniques.
A wonderful book full of inspiration and practical help for anyone with a chronic condition. It tells Vidyamala's life story and shows how she has learned to live with chronic pain and to set up Breathworks which aims to help anyone who is suffering.
It is a shame that the title will limit the readership of this wonderful book--an invaluable resource for anyone dealing with any type of pain or illness whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. I blogged a review here:
